I need some advice-I want to finish my degree, BUT my local university doesn't offer the program I want to study online. I would like to go into some sort of social work,or psych. I've read a little about the University of Pheonix.. is it any count? I just basically want a degree so I can go to work in that field!

My dp went to the U of Phoenix for his MBA (just finished in Oct '08). It was a rigorous program and carries a decent reputation. The program is fully accredited and his degree means the same as a degree from a physical university. His company even paid for it.

My mother got her master's degree through a distance learning program from SUNY Buffalo. More and more universities are offering online degree programs.
I'd look around at in-state schools that have that major or degree program and see if they offer online courses. Good luck! I'm thinking about returning to school myself in a couple of years.

I like the idea of doing an online degree from a University that is a regular university, that happens to have an online degree completion program. Not a school that's only online. It feels more legit to me. In my state (Oregon) four of the state colleges offer online degrees. They are limited in the majors offered, but Psychology is more common.

Eastern Oregon University has an online Psychology major.
Portland State University has an online Social Sciences major w/ Psychology minor. (that's what I'm going to be doing, along with their early childhood education certificate)
Oregon State University has a liberal studies major with a psychology minor.

You could check the website of the colleges in your state, so you can get local tuition rates, or you could go with something out of state too.

I totally agree with you. When I'm applying for a job, I don't want the school on my resume to be from a commercial on TV at 3am. I'm sure people do get decent degrees from those schools, but it just doesn't sound as legit when other people hear about it. I take classes from a B&M school which happens to offer my degree online. That way when I send out my resume, potential employers will not automatically assume that I did my schooling online.
