Back Wearing Help

My DD is almost 5months and about 14lbs. I love the moby wrap and she loves being in it on my front, but she is bigger now and its not easy to get housework done with her strapped to my front.

I looked online for instructions on how to tie her to my back, and the instructions i found were similar to the front wrap except the main middle part was underneath the left and right supports. When she is on my front it feels very secure, and the back wrap just didn't feel secure. I felt like I was hunching forward a little so she didn't flop backwards at all. I thought maybe I just needed a little more practice but then she fell asleep and her head didn't have any support and flopped to the side and I don't think there is anything much I could do to stop that the way I was doing it.

So does anyone have any good instructions for how to use the moby to carry baby on your back? or are there any other carriers/wraps/options that work well on the back?

Thanks

I think I'd get something more supportive than a Moby for back carries. You could try a woven wrap, a Mei Tai, or a SSC like a Beco or Ergo.

At 5 months and being new to back carries, I'd recommend a Beco Butterfly because of the internal seat. You put baby in first and then put the carrier on like a back pack. Very secure and comfy, also has a sleep hood for head support.

I did back carries with a Moby when my daughter was the size of your child. I never felt all that safe with it though. I ended up with an Ergo because my husband wasn't willing to take the jump to a woven wrap.

There are great videos on youtube for ties though.

I agree that a moby isn't the best wrap for back carries. You can make your own wrap (even if you don't sew, you want the 3rd set of directions the no sew woven) to learn on before you invest in one of the expensive woven wraps.

I also recommend the Beco Butterfly. I just got one and it is really comfortable.

A mei tei is another good option.

What they said! The moby and most other stretchies should not be used for back carries. There are lots of woven wraps at different price points and lengths that are great for back carries. Mei tais, pods, and sscs are all great options for back carries. Happy shopping!

Yep, time to switch to a woven wrap if you are wanting to do back carries with your Moby.

Check out this link though for back carries that can be done with a woven wrap.

that looks like a great site.

Thanks for all the help everyone! i'm glad that i'm using the wrong wrap instead of just being bad at it.

For the head flopping, it's nice to have a mei tai with a hood that you can pull up, which makes it easier to get the baby on your back, in my opinion (although it's not too hard in a wrap either). There's great you tube videos

This may seem like a dumb question, but why a woven vs a moby? I was planning on making a mei tei soon, I guess I'll have to start sooner so I can back carry. Eating out is a pita over LO's head! DD is 12 lbs and 4 mths. Really inquisitive.
I'm bummed, I really love my moby wrap...
And a related question- when did you start wearing your LO on your back?

a Moby wrap is stretchy material, it's just not ideal for back carries and as babies get heavier. Not near as secure as a good woven wrap.
