I believe that religion CAN be an incredibly dangerous thing - when it is misused. I also believe that religion can be an incredibly positive and uplifting thing when it is applied correctly. It saddens me that there are people who can't see that there are two sides to it, as there is to anything.
I'm also sad that some atheists feel the need to mock religion in order to disagree with it - and that some religious people feel the need to ostracize/damn/mock atheists to disagree with them. And on either side, spilling that intolerance into children, who oftentimes parrot their parents' ideals with no idea how disrespectful they are being, is deplorable.
The sister of one of my best friends is married to a Neo-Nazi UAV. Even though they hate us for just existing as Jews, we have NEVER shown them anything but respect. In my opinion, they too are children of G-d - as misguided and full of hate as they may seem to me, and I have to remember that G-d created them in His image as well. In a non-religious sense, it's just.not.right to treat another human being with disrespect, regardless of their beliefs.
To the OP:
Think to yourself whether you'd be ok if your children were to become religious. If you're not ok with that, your answers to religion questions will differ from those answers you'd give if you're of the mindset that no religion and religion are both valid and equal. Just a thought.
