homemade facial cleanser and moisturizer?

Its weird, I've never had skin problems in my life, but lately my skin has been.... erratic. Its soooo oily in the morning, and then (even if I don't wash it), by the end of the day, its dry as a bone. I've been breaking out a LOT(for me) too. I have a fairly natural safe (I think) facial cleanser, "skin clearing serum" and moisturizer, but they don't seem to be working right now, and they are too expensive.

I need something that I can make at home, easily, that works great for healing the skin, reducing breakouts, and leveling oil (I think its so oily in the mornings because its actually dry and is trying to counteract that). It also needs to be affordable. I've heard yogurt cream or honey both work wonders as a facial cleanser, but I can't wrap my mind around the idea, it seems so expensive. Is it not actually that expensive? Or what? what is your recipe?

TIA

the borax is ok for your skin?

I have always found anything with mineral oil to be drying. That could just be my skin though.

HisOwn,
I would be very careful with that recipe. It has water in it which is just a breeding ground for mold, bacteria etc.... products with water really need to be preserved or made in very small batches and kept in the refrigerator. And then they should be used within a week or so. Mold and bacteria can be present before you can see it and really, if you're spreading this on your face anywhere near your eyes, it can be a recipe for disaster.

Those of you considering this recipe, I would be very, very cautious.

Honey is a wonderful facial cleanser, and isn't expensive at all. A little goes a long way. I get raw honey at the farmer's market.

Try moisturizing with jojoba or coconut oil, or shea butter. I would also suggest a really deap oil cleansing. I use castor oil with a little olive oil (maybe in an 80/20 ratio). Apply liberally to your face, then wet a washcloth with very hot water and place over your face. Repeat when it cools. Do this for about 10 min, then gently wipe the oil off with the washcloth, rinsing periodically. Splash with cool water, mist with a little diluted apple cider vinegar and you're good to go. You could press a little oil into your face at that point if you feel like you need it.

Your skin sounds like mine was, so I recommend staying far away from soap products. They are stripping your skin, and your skin is rebelling. You need to get your skin back in balance. Drink lots of water!

I would love to try this, but guess I'm a little confused on how - can you use any kind of honey, or is the crystallized honey better? And do you just get your face wet then rub in honey then rinse off? Sounds yummy!

I have a jar where I mix 1 part sugar to 2 parts honey and use that as a cleanser/scrub. Works terrific!

Just regular honey is fine. Slather it on, rinse off. It couldn't be easier. If you like a little exfoliation, you can add a little baking soda.

Borax is not a preservative.

Please research this yourself if you do not believe me. Products made with water need to be preserved. You can not always see the bacteria and other organisms growing in an unpreserved product.

Here is a great article:

I'm definitely leaning towards trying the honey thing....

Well all hubris aside it is always a good idea to only use distilled water in homemade bodycare products, and to preerve it with a drop or two of GSE (grapefruitseed extract). Can't hurt is all I'm saying.

Just wanted to say I've been using the honey w/some brown sugar to wash my face for about 2 wks and it is AWESOME - I've always had a rough rashy area b/w my eyebrows and it is practically gone - I mean, had it since I was a baby! Also used it on the inside of my knees where I get ingrown hairs from shaving and it is totally bump free now. I am so a convert! Thanks to whoever suggested it (forgot to look before I started posting)!
