Were you homeschooled? And if so....

(X-posted in Learning at Home but I thought I'd post here, as well, to get a wider variety of answers. )

1) did your experience lead you to educate your children the way that you have (private, public, hs'd, other)?

2) are there any times throughout your hs'd life that you look back & think you missed out on something by not being in school?

3) do you have any distinctive positive memories? Times when you were aware of being at home & happy because of it?

4) do you have any distinctive negative memories? Times when you desperately wished you were not at home with your family?

I suppose I'm looking for experiences not necessarily related to education & learning but just the overall feel of being homeschooled. Did you feel unique & independent? Isolated? Free?

I went to school up until the 6th grade and was then hs and I loved being out of school. My mom was cool and laid back and we basically were unschooled.

My children are now currently hs (which they have always liked) but my oldest (about to turn 11) wants to try out the local public school this fall, which I'm all for. So since my oldest is going to school in the fall my youngest will too.

No, I don't look back and think I've missed anything by being hs. Most kids who are hs'ed are not home with their families all day so it's not like I was suffocated by my family.....I still had friends that I hung out with, called everyday, dated plenty of boys, got into trouble, went to clubs, parties, etc. My social life didn't change any when I was hs'ed.

I personally just want whatever makes my children and our family happy.

There are plenty of children in ps who love it.....and plenty who hate it....same with homeschooling.....you have to find what works for you and your children.

Other peoples experiences really don't have any effect on what your children's experiences will be ps or hs

Yes, yes....I know everyone's experiences are unique to the individual but we're new to homeschooling & I have this deep need right now to hear about the details from those who have been there, like yourself! Thanks for sharing, by the way.

I just want to get a grasp of the bigger picture. A true sense of what it's like to be homeschooled....not what it's like to homeschool.

Anyone else care to share their story? I posted on this forum as well as in "learning at home" because I thought there might be a few people who were homeschooled but chose not to HS their own children due to a not-so-great experience.
