Critique my stash for registry?

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be a first-time mom in July and am excited about cloth diapering. The first couple of weeks we will probably use disposables. There's a possibility that we will be moving to an apartment without a washer/dryer so I need enough diapers to last a minimum of 3 days. After the first 5 months, we'll probably have a day care arrangement of some sort, so I’d like to have a reasonable stash of easy to use diapers.

We are going to register for all of this through a non-profit organization in our town. Could you please critique my list so far?

- 8 Organic bumGenius AIOs (one size, with snaps)
- 10 bumGenius 3.0s
- 18 Growing Greens Hemp/Cotton Blend
- 1 Little Beetle Wool Cover in Small
- 1 Little Beetle Wool Cover in Medium
- 3 Imse Vimse Organic Cotton Covers in Newborn
- 3 Imse Vimse Organic Cotton Covers in Small
- 3 Imse Vimse Organic Cotton Covers in Medium
- 2 Imse Vimse Organic Cotton Covers in Large
- 2 Little Weeds (hemp/cotton doubler)
- 1 3-pack of Snappis (to use with the Growing Greens insert as a newborn contour)
- 2 packs of flannel wipes
- 1 wet bag (butter)
- 1 diaper pail liner/Tiny Tush laundry bag
- 1 diaper sprayer
- 1 roll of disposable liners

Thank you!

I think you may want a few more covers in small/med. With wool costing what it does, I would register for a few more of those. I would skip the larges thinking that I may be able to trade my smaller covers for larges later on. At a year, dd is wearing larges and you may not want to hold onto something for that long.

Are the growing greens prefolds? You would want double (?) the amt listed to do laundry every 3 days. Think about 20 diapers a day.

Thanks! The Growing Greens are fitted diapers. I will add a couple more wool covers in S/M.

bg's don't hold up well over time. they won't last until your child is over a year old if they last that long.
you are better off going with a pocket that has snaps instead of velcro.
i suggest fuzzi bunz one size or baby kangas. they are both wonderful.

I forgot to ask - if the Growing Greens are absorbent fitteds (not pre-folds) then should I still double the number?

re: BGs lasting. Half the BG stash would be the new AIO with snaps. Is the concern still there about not lasting? I'm hoping that I can stash up once and use for subsequent kid(s) so it would matter that they last.

Can't you just replace the velcro on the BGs?

the velcro is the only thing in the bgs that really wears out quickly.
and yes you can replace the velcro but it's a pain and if she's starting from scratch she might as well avoid having to deal with it .

I have skinny kids and the imse vimse stuff was too big on their thighs.

I agree with the pp about not going for the larges quite yet - I did exactly what you are doing (started from scratch but had never CD'd before) and I was thinking along those same lines - better get everything now so as to have it all on hand for later. So I got a mix of newborn, smalls ,mediums, and larges. Now that DD is in the s/m range, I am discovering the wide wide world of diaper selling/trading, and it would be nice if I had a bit more in the s/m range so I could sell/trade them. This is partly because you never really know what diapers will work for your baby until you experiment, and partly because there are some really cute/fun/fancy diapers out there that are really expensive new but can be affordable when used. So basically right now I have all this large stuff that I'm not using and a relatively tight stash of s/m stuff and a big wish that I had some extra s/m to sell or trade. I don't want to sell/trade the large stuff b/c it might be great, but I just dont' know yet so it's kind of torturing me right now

Basically I'd say rather than register for larges, throw in a few more different kinds of s/m so that you have more to experiment with. Then when you know what you like, you can sell/trade the s/m stuff for larges. I wish I had done this.

*also, I love the Imse Vimse covers and would highly recommend them. very soft, no leaks, and no binding marks on baby's back like some other wrap covers do.

Along the "don't get larges yet" lines, my 3 year old still fits in mediums... and has been pottying full time for a year. My 19 month old is still in mediums, might need larges soon (mostly for the rise), but hopefully will be potty learning this summer via the nakey-butt method. He definitely has the interest - he runs to the potty every time he goes (after he's wet/poopy, but still). I guess my point is, especially if you have skinny kids, you may never need larges, ever.

re:velcro - both my kids figured out how to peel these diapers off fairly early on. I prefer snaps for that reason.

you might want to register for two of the laundry bags that way you can wash one with the diapers and still have one to use while the other is being washed

thanks, everyone. this sounds like great advice. i'll go for more S/M and maybe just 1 large or none. but DH and i are both small (i'm short, he's skinny/avg ht) so it probably makes sense that our little one will be small too.

i'm really trying to take advantage of stocking up now since this is almost everything we're registering for but it's hard since the baby is not here yet so it's impossible to know what will fit and work best. this board has been really helpful. thank you!

I personally might get a few nb dipes. My ds was only 6lb something when he was born and it took a while to fit into nb clothes. If you are small and might have a small baby, it actually might be a while before your LO fits into the growing greens fitteds. I'm going to get a few fitteds in nb and 12 or 18 nb prefolds for this new baby (due Aug.), just to make sure we have something that fits. You can always use them as doublers later. Now, a lot of people can skip the smallest size, and I often recommend that, but with small babies, that might not be ideal. I'm also going to make sure I have about 6 nb covers since they poop so much!

I have 2 wetbags and 2 pail liners, just because I need a clean one while the other is getting washed. For what it's worth, I just use a pail with a lid and a plain cotton liner for my dipes (cheap!), but if you will be toting to the laundromat or something, you'll definately want a good liner or 2.

Enjoy these last few months of being pregnant and the fun of getting things ready!
