I have about 5 dozen Gerber prefolds that I received for shower gifts for DS 2 years ago. They are the kind with poly-fil. We diapered him in these effectively with Snappies and a variety of nylon/vinyl/PUL covers for about 9 months before he soaked through all the time. We upgraded to BG, which has worked okay.
Anyway, new baby is due in 8 weeks and I planned to use my prefolds again with some nicer covers. Now I have found all this info telling my how not good my Gerber prefolds are and I am looking for ways to make them better without buying a whole new stash of infant diapers. I have some and plan to buy more premium CPFs for when baby is bigger.
Would it be helpful to sew strips of flannel to the center of my prefolds to make them more absorbant? How many layers? Could I just use a zigzag stitch or should I fold the edges under before sewing? I don't have the toughest sewing machine in the world, so I don't really know how many layers it can handle.
Or should I just leave the diapers alone? They may not be the best, but they did work for DS.
Thanks for the help.

With 5 dozen, you'll still have 2.5 dozen "dual" dipes. If it catches baby pee, it's good, IMO
But I think you'll be fine, maybe get cpf's when baby gets bigger. That's my plan.
