What is the fridge test for EVOO?

I'm apparently out of the loop here. I've most recently been buying the EVOO in bulk at Costco - hey gotta try to save money somewhere, we have been spending up to $1,300 per month on groceries/supplements.

I really don't want to find out the oil is not good.

TIA,
Tracy

I wanted to ask this, too!

Okay, memory is a little fuzzy on the discussion that went on last time, but if you put your olive oil in the fridge it should start to solidify if it's pure (within 2 days if I remember correctly)

If I get a chance later I'll try to find the previous discussion....

If you shake your bottle well and put a bit in a small measuring cup or something, it should solidify faster--and it should be a solid chunk. Or, if your EVOO is like mine, sitting for weeks in the frig won't be enough to actually solidify it.

huh? I always leave my EVOO in the cupboard/room temp. I should keep it in the fridge???

haha I put my EVOO in teh fridge becuase i read that if i didn't use it within like 6 weeks I should---it completely solidified within a couple days--I was pleased---

No, it need not be kept in the fridge. this is some sort of test to see if it is "good" olive oil, or really extra virgin (like the chicken - inside joke).

They've been cutting OO with other oils (including peanut, canola, corn..) in order to keep up with demand or maximize profits or something.
If you put it in the fridge for a few days, it should solidify. If it *separates*, you know that it is *not* just OO.
I believe that's how it goes.
Kathy's the one that told me about it, though I did see the article.

there was a thread on here a few months ago - one specific to the allergy forum, and another one on the Nutrition thread. Don't blame me. I didn't start this rumor. And the one I used to buy at Costco (Berio) neither became cloudy or solidified in the fridge. I now use Scalafani, which is the one by the guy that got CT to make a law making it illegal to claim to be olive oil if it wasn't (which was already covered by the FDA labeling laws, but someone thought we needed another law specific to olive oil, because you can never have too many laws).

WHAT?? REALLY??? Are they at least labeling it correctly so you know if there's peanut oil in it/ My son is allergic to peanuts and dairy so I use EVOO in his foods. This is really disheartening! :

Great, the cheap costco olive oil will be out. Meanwhile, I'm getting lambasted in the frugality and finances forum because I dared to admit how much we spend on groceries.

I can't get my grocery bill down anymore than it already is and DH is still wishing I could trim another $300 off it. Not with the stuff I have to buy (though he said it was okay to spend today since we were having people over).

Oh, will you still get lambasted if you tell them you react to lamb?!??

P.S> Loved the chicken reference.

I don't know if it is the same brand or not because I can't remember the brand but wanted to say that I had a big plastic jug of Costco EVOO sitting in my garage and I'm in MN so it was been cold, below 40. And the whole jug eventually solidified.

HTH,
Tracy
