Help!! weaning 28 mth old off from Cars and Thomas...

I have been a bad mama and have let DS become hopelessly addicted to "Cars" and Thomas videos. He could really care less about any other programming. I know its affecting his behavior. So my question is....do I make him go cold turkey? Or, do I gradually wean him? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

I don't really have an opinion about weaning vs. cold turkey. I think that depends on whether you are trying to eliminate TV or just limit it.

However, I wanted to point out that maybe you could substitute books and toys to fulfill his needs. My 3 year-old twins boys are HUGE Thomas fans, but have only seen the show a handful of times. They have Thomas books, Thomas pjs and Thomas toy trains to get their fix. In our commercial culture there are limitless ways to introduce our kids to licensed characters.

DS is also hopelessly addicted to books too!!! I'm not exaggerating when I say I probably read him a good 40 books a day (it could be the same 5 over and over and over, LOL) He's also been known to get up from his naps and sit and "read" books for a 1/2 hr. We have a playroom downstairs complete w/a train table, blocks, etc. We really don't have a lot of commercialized stuff except for a Handy Manny doll complete w/the tools (DH is a woodworker, go figure). Once the good weather is here for the season tv will probably be a non-issue....he LOVES going outside and gathering sticks.

I wouldn't mind going tv free. Not sure I have DH on board w/that. We're both in agreement on cutting way back. But, not on cancelling the cable and going completely free.

Update time....I went cold turkey with DS this morning. I turned off the tv before he got out of bed. He appears to not have noticed. This was one of my theories....that if it wasn't on to begin with that he wouldn't notice there was no tv. He has not requested any videos whatsoever and the whining overall has been at a minimum. We had an incredibly peaceful morning. He spent the first hour on the couch reading books. Then he played w/his cars and trucks for awhile. Then we gravitated to his bedroom where he played w/blocks and his keyboard and more trucks. Mom sat there knitting, drinking coffee, and playing. This lasted for a couple of hours. Then back to the couch for more books. I think the tv could disappear and he wouldn't care. I guess its more of a mom and dad thing. And, mom is completely sold at this point. I've been able to get way more done (duh!) this way than I did when the tv was babysitting him. I've also moved all toys out of the living room into his bedroom. So far so good!!!
