feeling proud and sad and glad

Maya finished nursing in December. She was 5.5. In our nursing relationship I followed her lead entirely for the first few years, then more and more of my needs became a part of the dynamic. When she finished, I had a lot to do with it. More than I expected, but, it was still done together.

This morning, she was visiting one of my breasts which she sometimes does still (she'll sleep holding on to one, etc.). I've got colostrum in there now (due in early May). She said, "If I sucked on nee-nee I bet it would taste funny."

I don't know what I was thinking (it used to be hard for her to have her mouth near my breast because she wanted to nurse), but I said, "You know, if you want to try, go ahead."

She said, "No. I like not nursing."

WOW WOW WOW.

Our cuddling together has been so much more complete since she no longer relies entirely on nursing for comfort. That's been a lovely thing.

I just feel so many feelings, so proud, so happy, so sad...

congratulations, sounds like she was ready and will remember nursing fondly. what more could either of you ask for, and your sadness is just normal feelings that your baby is growing up. great timing for your second child, too!

:-) Thank you!!! I think you're right. It's just so intense when they have these huge growing events. :-)
