Glycerin?

I was thinking of making a vanilla flavor with glycerin instead of alcohol since I don't know how to tell if vanilla extract is GF.

Do any of you TFers use glycerin? What do you think of it?

I don't know how TF glycerin is but I'm curious how you'll make vanilla extract with it! The 'good' stuff I see is nearly always alcohol based and I avoid alcohol on religious principle and while I *could* use those extracts, I'd rather avoid them. My only other mainstream option is made with another solvent whose name escapes me now that you can taste in the extract, bleh.

Have you tried the Frontier Co-op one? I was about two seconds away from placing an order when I noticed these threads.

I linked to the RecipeZaar instructions for homemade glycerin-based vanilla extract in the other thread ... I've not done it myself though (laziness abounds ... .

I know a few who do, and all are allergic to corn. I get mine from Frontier. I've used it as a sweetener in certain applications.

Yea, I order from Frontier most months too (our natural living board runs a co-op every month.) I also use it like a sweetener as well as to add the flavor of vanilla.

Liquesce, that is exactly what I was looking for!! Thank you!

So, what is glycerin? I didn't know that it was an alcohol - is there such a thing as glycerin that DOES contain gluten? Because most of the gf flavorings that I see use glycerin. I figured I was safe if I just used glycerin...

I'm trying to save money by making my own. I ordered a big bag of vanilla beans from Frontier a couple of months ago - I'm hoping glycerin isn't too expensive.
