Allergies and asthma - is there a link?

Please forgive my ignorance - I don't really know much about this at all, but I'm trying to find info for my cousin. His 1yo son has had asthma pretty much his whole life, and his wife has allergies. The baby doesn't have any known allergies, but with the family history, it seems like he's at greater risk. The poor little one is in the hospital right now because he keeps having severe asthma attacks despite treatment... so my question is, could he actually have an undetected allergy that keeps causing the attacks? If so, what would be the most likely culprits, and what would be the next step? By the way, no one in the family smokes and they don't have any pets.

I'd really appreciate any input or resources to help out this little one!

Yes allergies and asthma are variations of an autoimmune continuum. Corn is in everything.

Did mama or baby have antibiotics near birth? Is baby on formula? It probably has corn as a base.

I don't know about antobiotics, but he was formula-fed.

I would recommend reading Healing the New Childhood Epidemics by Dr. Kenneth Bock. He talks about the connections (same root causes) between autism, ADHD, allergies, and asthma. It's a fantastic book.

I would probably start with a gluten & dairy free diet to see if that helps.
