this scared me..

so both my mother-in-law and Father-in-law are nurses and COMPLETELY 100%against our choice not to circ.

Today my MIL says to DH on the phone 'I hope sophie is pulling his foreskin back to clean as uncric'd babies get dirty under there' ...this is from a nurse!!!!

FIL also said 'wow...you havent had him done yet' and DH said 'no, and we're not going to there is no point' and FIL laughed a said 'ummm yeah there is ....INFECTION!!!'

This was prompted by DH calling and asking why he was done Its super scary to me that people in the medical field are so damn cluless, makes me never ever want to leave them alone with DS!

the past thought of needing to clean under there was started when the penile cancer myth started which was supposedly caused by smegma but now we learned smegma is Normal! but some doctors still don't realize that and suggest that parents really scrub smegma with perioxide

just tell them your son's penis is not up for discussion and make sure he's never left to be changed a diaper by your mom otherwise he would end up forcefully retracted because i don't think she would listen to your reasons why it's no longer recommended to clean under foreskin because foreskin is attached because she proably retracted so many kids in her life time she will proably say they are not attached then give her a no circ pamphlet .

Those dreaded infections!!!! God knows that 85% of men are suffering from them every single day... hahahaha

Well as a nurse and mom of 2 intact sons, I support your decision wholeheartedly! I'm assuming that since they are your in-laws, the probably went to nursing school 20-30 years ago and were "educated" on care of the "uncircumcised" penis back then. Although, I could probably come up with a list of a couple dozen nurses/doctors that I work with from 20's-50's who DO NOT advocate for circumcision and have intact children of their own! Of course, I'm from Vermont and we're just a bunch of dirty hicks up here

Speaking of infections, I'm the only one is my house who has every had any kind of infection like that, 3 UTIs and one yeast infection (following a course of abx for UTI!) Perhaps, I should get circumcised...I could have DIED! (heavy on the sarcasm per my usual nature!)

Think of all the tonsillectomies kids used to get...nowadays they're hardly ever done, and only after multiple multiple infections...

If your in-laws are still working nurses I would DEFINITELY took time to educate them on the issue to spare any little boys they may damage by retraction and wrong care info.

I would print them some good info, including from the doctors oposing circ website with their contact info. I'd ask them to call DOC if they have any questions (nurses do trust doctors). I would explain to them that retraction is what CAUSES infection. That 85% of the world is intact with a rate of circ for medical reasons being under 1% while in the US (thanks to ignorant doctors and nurses) it is over 10%.

Please educate those people.

I agree with the PP. I would take the time to TRY and educate them. I would also, if you plan on leaving the baby with them at all, make sure that under NO circumstances are they to retract him. EVER.

There are plenty of people in the medical field who are passionate intactivists. My OB was delighted to learn that my sons are intact, and gave an impassioned speech about the cruelty of circumcision. We have also found a supportive pediatrician whose nurses are knowledgable about intact penises.

I'm sorry that that your ILs are giving you & your DH a hard time...they're probably just reciting what they were taught in nursing school in the 1970s or earlier...DO NOT let them change your baby's diaper ever!!!

I would blame the whole medical field. Its just that the medical field, just like any other wing of science, more is understood with the more research done.

Your In-Laws both were nurses. Key word WERE. They have not been trained in the most up to date information and because of that they go around thinking they know it all, when they actually are VERY misinformed.

If I were you I would get together medical information and show them how wrong they really are.

I need to get circed ASAP myself!

What I find sad, is that this misinformation maimed my poor DSS 6 years ago. He has to excuse himself to the bathroom at least 10 times per day to pull and tug and scratch at his sore tight circed and VERY scarred penis.

You did your son a favor. Good for you.

I'll jump on the circ train. Between April and June 2008, I had 2 UTIs, 2 yeast infections and an unidentifiable vaginal infection. The horror...let me tell you, taking antibiotics and drinking a lot of water was so hard. Almost impossible.

The fact that so many peds go against the AAP recommendation is sad. Thankfully so many nurses TODAY are intactivists, even if the previous generation is clueless.
