Chat with me about Applique Patches/Patches for Pants

I have the oh-so common issue with my ds - oodles of holes in the knees of his pants. I've always meant to put preemptive patches inside his pants, but never really remember to do so until it's too late.

He's got quite a large hole in an otherwise perfectly good pair of pants. I don't particularly care for the iron-on patches. I have difficulties getting them to stay ironed on.

I don't have a machine that can do a zig zag stitch. After some consideration I thought about doing something like this, but with a somewhat simpler rectangle patch and possibly a blanket stitch?

I really like the way the patches look over here and here. They just look like they were straight stitched on - like they cut out some rectangles of fabric ala the above process and just sewed with a machine along the edge? Do you think the "small folds for movement" are necessary? How would you go about doing it?

Since the fabric I'm planning on putting on is a thinner material and none of the bottom weight fabrics I've seen are quite what I'm looking for I assume I'll need some kind of reinforcement - a fusible interfacing? I have a really stiff one, but wondered if that would restrict movement. I assume something like Wonder Under (which I've seen referenced all over the place for Appliques) really functions more for adhesive properties than anything, correct?

Just though I'd post with the answer to my own question. I picked up some fusible fleece and fused it onto the back of the fabric I was going to use for the patch. Using some embroidery floss (all 6 strands) I stitched the patch on to the pants using a blanket stitch. I think it turned out really well. Time will tell how well it lasts!
