Starting out...Is this enough?

Yet another post from a first time pregnant mom who is wondering if you CD experts can tell her if she is well-prepared? It sometimes seems overwhelming to start a stash from scratch, especially with all the choices out there! I am due next month and just want to be prepared, I don't want to have to order anything when the baby is new, I just want to enjoy my time with her and have enough supplies on hand to last the first few months.

What we have at the moment is:
-18 newborn prefolds
-18 small prefolds
(I don't know what type, we bought them from our local CD store, but I think they are unbleached, as they are kind of natural/off-white color and we had to wash/dry them 3-7 times first before use as per instructions)
-3 x-small bummies covers
-3 x-small thirsties covers
-6 BG 3.0 pocket one-size diapers
-6 happy heinys pocket one size diapers
-4 hemp babies doublers
-1 pack of Imse Vimse flushable liners (just in case of needing to use rash cream)

(and...just ordered and coming in the mail soon)
-2 snappies
-6 kissaluvs size 0 fitted diapers
-2 dappi covers size NB

Will this be OK for the first few months? I tried to pick a few types of diapers to try out since we are new to this, based on recommendations from the woman at our local CD store and also what I read on this forum. Is there anything I might be sorely lacking? Or not have enough of? What of what I have do you recommend we use for overnight, or should I get another type of diaper/cover/system for nighttime?

Thank you!

I think it looks like a smart stash!! How well different things fit will depend somewhat on the size of your babe. A bigger baby will grow out of the nb pf's really fast. My first babe though was only 6 lb ish and I would have wanted nb pf's for him. The pockets may be big at first, but some people can use them early. Again, depends on baby.

I think your stash looks great! Do you have a wetbag for the diaper bag and pail/liner?

This is how it works for us. I have 2 wetbags, so one is ready while the other is in the wash. For pails, I just bought 2 garbage pails with lids. One is in ds's room, the other is in our laundry room/bathroom. For both pails I made just a plain cotton liner to go in there. Even for my poopy dipes (with go straight to the bathroom/laundryroom), I don't really need a waterproof liner because it's about 2 feet from the machine. Now I'm thinkin I could have saved myself some sewing and just used an old pillowcase! Anyhow, if you will have to tote your laundry a ways, you will need a waterproof liner or tote to use for dirty dipes.

You will want small covers before too long, but again, depends on baby. Thirsties for example - xs fits 6-12 lbs about... so once you get close to that bigger size, you'll need some more. btw, the dappi covers worked for us, but I think they tend to run a little small, so they might not fit as long as the other ones.

For overnight, you'll probably be fine. Not like they need to last 12 hours straight at first. If you need, you can use your doublers or 2 pfs.

I think your stash looks great! I'm due in Aug, so I'm excited about working on my stash soon...I'll have two in dipes then! yikes!

It looks good... I just might get a few more snappis b/c they like to run away at night when you are sleeping.

You will need small covers in a month or three.

I think it looks good!

You might consider a diaper pail liner, and a wet bag if you're going to be going out. (They're not a necessity, just a convenience.)

For nighttime with newborns, I didn't do much different because I was up nursing them anyway and a change was no big deal. After they started sleeping longer, I liked using a pocket diaper at night, with a hemp insert under a microfiber insert.

Have fun!

Thank you all! I am happy to know that I am on the right track.

I didn't include the wet bags and the pail liners. I have 2 Wammies pail liners, 1 small wet bag and one medium wet bag for the diaper bag (short and long outings respectively.) I haven't gotten the diaper pail yet, I'm just planning to use a kitchen trash can with a step lid. I thought that a 13 gallon was way too large, so I am thinking about a 10 gallon one, do you think that will be OK? It will live in our upstairs bathroom, which is attached to our bedroom. We don't have a laundry room, our washer and dryer are in a closet (very odd, I know) so we will have the diapering station in our bedroom, but didn't want to store the diaper pail in there.

I have been thinking about getting some size small covers just to have for when the baby is that size...But DH wants to wait because he is hoping to use just the BG and HH pockets by that point, and if we choose to do that, he wants to save the money so we can buy more of them. But we may love the prefold system, and if so, then we will surely get larger sizes of diaper covers! I guess we are just trying everything out as a newborn, to see what we will ultimately like to use. That's why I got the 3 different types of diapers, the BG/HH pockets, the prefolds, and the kissaluvs fitteds (are they the same as what I have seen referred to as an AIO?) I assume that we will not be able to use the BG/HH right away, until the baby is a little bigger, but I wanted to get them just in case!

Oh, I was wondering, since my only suggestion so far as to what to add other than the size small covers were more snappis, how many more snappis do you think I should get? And, do you always use snappis with prefolds, or sometimes do you just fold the diapers and put the cover over them? I know we have to use snappis with the dappi covers, but wasn't sure about the Thirsties and Bummis covers because they have the velcro or snaps.

PS, I am also happy to see that many of you sell CDs yourselves! Anything that I can't get from my local CD store, I will look at your sites and see if you have it. Do any of you do registries? My friend is throwing me a baby shower and wants me to make a registry. I feel strange about it, but if I am going to ask for things, I think I want to ask for all CD stuff, like size small covers and some more BG 3.0s and such.

You don't have enough BG/HH to switch to using just those unless you want to do laundry every single night. You are going to need some size small covers and probably fairly soon. We had Kissaluv size 1 and my daughter was big enough for them by three weeks old. I would have been rather frustrated with size 0.

Given that you can fold prefolds down a lot, you may be better off being more in the size small section and less in the newborn section.

If you like one-size diapers may I suggest looking at: Swaddlebees one-size or Kanga's with snaps. I'm having a bummer of a time with the aplix wearing out on our HH and BG.

I hope you have a wonderful babymoon!

Your stash looks great!

Consider getting some cloth wipes. Kissluvs brand or I love Quilter's Nappies (on Hyena cart).

Bummis smalls fit pretty good when our baby was 10 lbs.

Soon you will have time nursing at the computer to shop for them.

i would definately get a few more covers, probbly in small rather than newborn just b/c the newborn sizes don't last as long

and a few diaper pins, maybe just the smallest set you can find, just to try

when ds was first born we used pins but it didn't take long before we went w/ the lazy method and just tri-folded the pfs into a cover

kissas are not aio's .... you'll need a cover for them

hth

Sounds good to me!!!! I agree you might want to try pins. I loved them in the beginning. I still use them now. I am looking forward to when it gets WARM again and he can go around in just a nice pinned prefold

I do registries. I can turn it on if you like.

As for Snappis, I keep 5 on hand at all times. I think they are like shoes - you shouldn't keep using the same one without a break to relax. I never trifolded prefolds; I always Snappi them on, b/c it contains the poop much better and so you need fewer covers.
