Natural alternatives to anti-depressants?

My therapist is recommending I begin an anti-depressant. I am usually against anything chemical/pharmacalogical. However, I feel bad enough that a pill a day sounds fantastic.

Before I go down that path, are there any natural alternatives I should explore? Let me begin with: I am a single mother of two young children, ages 2 and 5.5. I have a full-time job. I have some help with my children but getting more is a struggle. I know I need to sleep more, eat better, exercise and make time for myself. At this point, my depression keeps me from doing those things. If you can suggest an alternative that can take the edge off so I can return to a healthier lifestyle, I am all ears.

Thank you in advance!

I used St. John's wort as an alternative to antidepressants a few years back. It worked well for about two months after which time I felt better, although not completely cured. I did make me feel a bit drowsy the first few days, so if you work on weekdays I would start it on Friday night or Saturday to avoid feeling tired at work. Could be worth a try for you too!

When I stopped taking meds I starting taking omega-3 pills. Also, I read that many women with depression may have a vit. B-12 deficiency. (also called niacin, I think.) So try taking a B complex.
That said, I am at the point now where I think I may need more help than just those things. So... Give them a chance to work for you, but if you need meds after all, please try them. I don't think there is anything wrong with trying natural alternatives first, though. Good Luck!

I am currently trying out 'The Mood Cure' by Julia Ross. So far so good for me. I've only been doing it for a week or so so it could still be the placebo effect. But whatever it is I feel better enough to eat well and exercize. Worth a look I think. There is a huge thread that talks about it here.
