Stuffing for RRPs?

I'm making a bunch of RRPs for my babe due in May/June, about 2 or 2 1/2 dozen of them, out of recycled and salvaged materials from my house and sewing stash. I know you can stuff them with prefolds and such, but is there any reason I couldn't make a bunch of non-prefold stuffers for them out of all my leftover materials? I have a TON of cotton jersey and woven cottons, and a couple yards worth of cotton terry velour (terry one side, velour the other, super soft and absorbent).

If it would work, how big should I make them, and how many layers?

Hmmm, as long as they are solid cotton, they will certainly work! The velour will work nicely, but it seems a shame to have it hiding inside the diaper! lol. Anyhow, I wouldn't put more than 3 layers of that stuff, maybe 2, cuz it will take forever to dry.

With the jersey or woven, again, it's the drying issue. Just a guess - maybe 5 layers? The other thing you can do it make them long or wide and fold them to put them in. That way you can get more layers in there and better washing/drying.

I usually make my inserts about 5x12 or 5x14, but that's for a bigger kid. If you want some more nb sizes, 4x8 or 4x10 might work better. You'll probalby have to experiment a little. Try drying them, etc. so you can see what might work best. Like you could make them 8x10 and then fold them to be 4x10. kwim?

I have enough prefolds, microfiber inserts, etc laying around that I haven't made any for my RRP's, but I don't see why you couldn't.

Instead of doing thick layers too, you could make like a trifold soaker, something with 3 layers, but when it's folded makes 9 layers.

I'm making our entire stash except maybe some covers, so any prefolds, inserts, etc. have to come from my materials and labor. Cheaper, but time-intensive, and I still have a HUGE garden to put in before the babe comes. So...looking for quick, easy, and functional options. I like the trifold or double fold soaker idea.

Thinking about it, if I were to go with the trifold soaker, should I sew down the middle at the "thirds" points, sort of like a prefold, to keep all the layers from shifting any when I fold it?

footprintsbaby -- Yup, they're all 100% cotton, and all of the recycled or salvaged materials are of varying weights from thin to fairly heavy.

I'm sort of cringing at the thought of putting that yummy velour inside a diaper myself. I made some mama pads topped with it back before I got pregnant, and wow were they nice. I actually made a dozen nb fitteds lined with the same fabric, and matching doublers, too, because it was so nice. But if this babe grows as fast as my last one did, he'll be out of NB in no time flat.

I like your idea to experiment and see what dries best. I think my dryer should have no problem getting anything dry in one load; I can get a huge load of towels dry in the same amount of time that my washer takes to wash the next load. All the same, it would probably be a good idea to see what dries the fastest.

Thanks, ladies. You've confirmed what I'd hoped and gotten me thinking now, and that's a good thing.

The trifold soakers I own are sewn at the thirds points. It makes it really easy to fold, definitely.
