Instead of doing thick layers too, you could make like a trifold soaker, something with 3 layers, but when it's folded makes 9 layers.

I'm making our entire stash except maybe some covers, so any prefolds, inserts, etc. have to come from my materials and labor. Cheaper, but time-intensive, and I still have a HUGE garden to put in before the babe comes. So...looking for quick, easy, and functional options. I like the trifold or double fold soaker idea.
Thinking about it, if I were to go with the trifold soaker, should I sew down the middle at the "thirds" points, sort of like a prefold, to keep all the layers from shifting any when I fold it?
footprintsbaby -- Yup, they're all 100% cotton, and all of the recycled or salvaged materials are of varying weights from thin to fairly heavy.
I'm sort of cringing at the thought of putting that yummy velour inside a diaper myself. I made some mama pads topped with it back before I got pregnant, and wow were they nice. I actually made a dozen nb fitteds lined with the same fabric, and matching doublers, too, because it was so nice. But if this babe grows as fast as my last one did, he'll be out of NB in no time flat.
I like your idea to experiment and see what dries best. I think my dryer should have no problem getting anything dry in one load; I can get a huge load of towels dry in the same amount of time that my washer takes to wash the next load. All the same, it would probably be a good idea to see what dries the fastest.
Thanks, ladies. You've confirmed what I'd hoped and gotten me thinking now, and that's a good thing.
