Is my sling causing Mastitis?

I have had mastitis going on 4 times already in 5 months....the first 2 times were when baby was... 5-6 weeks old and happened in a matter of 2 weeks...one after the other....i just got over a bad case of mastitis about 2 weeks ago....i ended up taking antibiotics with that round....well after wearing my 20 pund baby in a ring sling yesterday i feel it coming on again...and to look back the bout of mastitis i had 2 weeks ago followed a trip to town with babe in the sling for a few hours....OMG...i love our sling...i wore ds #3 in it all the time...with no probelms other than lower back pain...i wear this baby on my left hip and the ring is on my right side...the left breast is the one that keeps getting mastitis. I'm wondering if this is really why i'm getting mastitis? It's the only logical reason i can think of. I mean it's full blown fever... body aches...head aches..it's mastitis.

If it were your right side I'd have said maybe, but given that it's your left where babe is in the pocket, I'd say it's doubtful.

Were you wearing a different I'm-going-out bra or something? Or maybe just being out and busy for a longer period of time meant less nursing?

If the baby's latch was uneven due to the sling and the breast wasn't getting emptied equally, it might tend to cause problems.

There is one way to find out - give up nursing in the sling for a bit and see if the problem clears up.

I found that when I put DS in the sling he would not nurse as much, partly because he was lulled to sleep and slept longer. I found that I had to hold in sans sling and nurse to make sure I completely *emptied*. I had mastitis once and OMGosh never again Could it also be the combination of your bra (underwires? or tight) and the sling and the baby on that side that is all contributing to it. I would defintely check to make sure your infection is completely going away with the antibiotics especially since your having them back to back so soon
