Tell me about gluten intolerance.... - Page 2

Hey there!

I should clarify. We tested him for celiac disease and it came back negative. It was the celiac panel test, and I believe it tested for 5 different things. Only one out of the five panels came back "elevated". I don't recall the units but it was somewhere around 50, and it indicated a "possible gluten intolerance" which I think it means it IS a gluten intolerance. The doctor didn't seem worried about it other than to avoid wheat. So they said he doesn't have celiac. We then had the RAST test to test for other food allergies, and pretty soon we will test him some more, but the RAST test did show elevated for gluten intolerance. Any suggestions on any other tests we should we take? The allergist was going to do the skin test, but should we have the RAST done again? Any advice would help.

I do make bread, and did make it. I feel like I've tried ALL kinds of GF foods and my son doesn't like 'em, even ones I make from scratch. ALL that work for nothing. I was even trying to increase his calorie intake to make up for the weight loss and it didn't work, he still lost weight.

We went dairy free for a long time, 4 mo., but it was before we went GF. It didn't give us any change in dipes or asthma. But we haven't tried them together. But honestly, if we went both GFCF I just don't know how he would survive. He would eat NOTHING. He would waste away. And if he ever got sick, well sh*t, we'd end up being admitted in the hospital for sure.

I will come back later with suggestions b/c time is limited at the moment, but the RAST does not test for intolerances. If it came back elevated, it is an IgE-mediated, full-blown allergy.

When you say you tested for celiac, was it a scope or just the panel?

It definitely was the panel. The RAST test for some reason (I need to dig it up) as it was interpreted by the doc said it indicated a possible intolerance to gluten, but since we had done the celiac panel before and it had IgG at around 50 (I think 55?), it indicated an intolerance to wheat.

I will also dig up the paperwork again and let you guys know the nitty gritty of what it said! Any suggestions welcome! THANK YOU Missy for your time, you are sweet.

Mama, this is a clue. Many, many, many kids & adults who have gluten/dairy issues self-limit to those foods. MANY. Many have gone off of them and survived. (Hi! said, as I wave) There may be an adjustment period but he will eventually eat other foods. (And don't go immediately replacing all the diary with soy-approximates, for so many reasons.) Just keep offering a variety of healthy options. I've heard a little one needs to try something eleventy billion times before they like it. It's a true fact; read it on wiki.

Obviously I'm being a bit silly, but this is really a serious matter.

If you could cure your son's asthma by cutting out gluten and dairy, would you? Going GFCF for a month (or three) is a nice way of finding how that would work for your family. If it doesn't work, then you tried. If it does work, well then, there you go.
