March Unitarian Universalist Thread - All Welcome

Welcome to the March support, community, information, conversation, and fun thread for UUs and UU curious.

Here is the link to the previous February Thread.

Come on in and say "Hi", ask a question, tell a story, or feel free to just lurk for awhile. I believe some talk about SUUSI was just getting started in the old thread, so let's not let that drop just because it is a new month!

It is not Spring yet, at least not where I am, but I have faith that it is on the way!

I am changing my PC Banner quote to:

Quote:
I trust in Nature for the stable laws of beauty and utility. Spring shall plant and Autumn garner to the end of time. ~ Robert Browning
Wishing everyone a month filled with joy, peace, love, and renewal.

Adele

Well it's official, we joined our local UU as members today! : We've been lurking, sporadically going to this new one for years, we previously were members at a UU in our old town but had a harder time committing to this one for some reason. We decided once and for all to make it a priority and have been going regularly for a few months now. Woo hoo!

I have a question, for any other members or folks who contribute financially to their UU congregation. They gave us this guidline paper, starting with 3% of your income going up to 10%. Even 3% isn't really doable for us this year, is that a big deal do you know? At our old church we only gave $20 a month but that church was super laid back and everyone knew we were pretty broke then.

It's exciting, a little daunting, i am timid about meeting new people and so is my husband. We just need to keep going and it'll work out, i'm sure.

HeatherE, congratulations on becoming members! I'm a new member too & probably received pretty similar paperwork about financial contributions. It is my understanding that although of course it would be helpful if people could donate a percentage of their income to the church, any amount is appreciated. I did feel some internal pressure about the financial committment, but simply decided to choose a figure I was comfortable with and if there is a time when I can give more I will. HTH.

I just finished two weeks of teaching in RE & although it was fun I am looking forward to getting back to my adult time next week!

I was too tired and slept in too late to go today.

I'm not sure if I regret it or not, for my daughters' sake.

Today ended up being just like any other day.

I spent a lot of time with them playing and reading.

Congratulations on becoming a member, Heather!

Regarding the contribution, I think money is a touchy subject at a lot of UU churches. My church is right now in the middle of our annual campaign and we will make our pledges for next year at a special, all-congregation service on March 29. So we are hearing a lot of testimonials and I was invited to a reception at a member's house for "select members" on "the direction of our church going forward". Basically I see everybody trying to walk that line between coming across as being greedy and/or valuing my money more than my presence and my time, and the simple fact that running and growing a church costs money and if we want it to stay around and stay vibrant we need to provide that money.

The little chart my church hands out has different levels (Helping, Supporting, Sustaining, etc.) and the amount for each level is in a percentage that is different for different levels of income. The range is from 2% to 10%.

I have no doubt than any amount you can give will be perfectly fine. They just want you to consider the importance of the church in your life and pledge accordingly. For myself, last year I did not increase my pledge over the previous year at all because I really felt that I could not afford to. This year I intend to increase it, even though it still seems like I can't afford it, but the church adds so much to my life and I know that if I pledge it I will find a way to pay it.

With all that said, starting the chart at 3% seems a little ambitious to me. I gave right around 2.5% last year and I am going to try to push that close to 3% for the first time this year, but I doubt I will get all the way there. And my church is really, really important to me, so it is definitely not lack of commitment keeping my contribution down. What has been said at my church that I think is a pretty good idea is to think about what the church means to you and what you think you can afford to give each month and write that down. Then add just a little bit - 5 or 10 dollars a month - and pledge the result. Don't worry too much about what percentage of your income your pledge ends up being. The charts are just to give you a starting point for thinking about your pledge.

Child Dedication

Hi everyone,

DH and I have decided to become members of our UU congregation. We have also signed up for the Easter Child Dedication ceremony. This is our current minister's last year with us so we really wanted to take these steps with her.

Could you please describe the Child Dedication ceremonies at your congregation? I am sure that we will have some input into ours and I am looking for some inspiration!

Many thanks in advance!

Hi all, thanks for the new thread Adelle.
Congrats on joining Heather!

How much do I donate? I used to give 5% when I was working. The only income I have this year is my $1200 tax refund, and I'm giving $300 to my church. My DP (we aren't married and don't have joint accounts) doesn't go to church and he pays the bills but I don't ask him to donate any $$ to my church. BUT if you were to look at my household's income the $$ I donate is less than 1%. My church community is huge to me, a very important part of my kids lives, and I want to do everything I can to make sure that my new congregation grows and is still there for me and my kids 10 years from now. So in my family my small amount of $$ that I get for my tax refund goes automatically into my checking account, and my monthly auto insurance is deducted monthly. After that anything that is left I have used to pay for things like a class at the Parks and Rec for my son, or swim lessons for him etc. I made the choice two years ago, that church was way more important to their lives than 8 weeks of tumbling. Church fed the larger part of their growing needs, and so that's why I give pretty much all my personal spare $$ to my church.

That said in our congregation the only two people who are privy to what anyone donates is the treasurer, and the minister. That's it. The reason for the treasurer is obvious for the minster, is because our minister has a better idea of peoples personal situation. Some families may not be able to donate anything in this economy. But our minister can help them find other ways of serving the church that fulfill them personally and fulfill the obligation as members. Maybe they volunteer to chair a committee, teach RE once ever month, be the person that puts away the hymnals every Sunday. We have a lot of jobs, because we rent our space for just a few hours every Sunday and the whole works has to be set up and taken down every week.

Child Dedications? The only two babies that have been dedicated at my church are my kids. We are a new congregation, and most people with kids have joined us after they felt their kids were too old (which really isn't a factor for UU's just for these families personally). Their dedications rank up there as one of the most moving celebrations I have ever been to in my life. Both services were similar, my minster talked about the uniqueness of the kids. He put a call to us, the family to care for them and nurture their independence and tot he congregation to be there to help guide and love our children. I'll see if I can find the text and post it later.

Back in the UU Autumn Thread, *max* and I described our children's dedications in posts 144 and 146.

Stargirl:
Every UU church does dedications a little bit (or a lot) differently, but I have no doubt it will be a wonderful ceremony for you.
Congratulations on becoming a member!

We have had a lot of rain lately and our next-door neighbor's backyard has flooded to the point where there is a small pond in it. I did not realize how apt that word was until this morning when I saw a pair of ducks in the "pond"! My daughter and I watched the male and female paddle around for a bit and then I sat down to eat my breakfast and read my daily meditation in Earth Bound. The meditation started out ". . . the birds are returning . . ."

Hello! Yay for March...Today is my birthday: I am 25 years young

I am looking forward to May actually, my son is going to attend the "child dedication"

Have any of your children done that at your UU church?

LOL now that I go back and actually read, i see that we ARE talking a little about child dedications hehe...

QUESTION about the money stuff. Do you have to "tell" your pledge? and how do you pay it??? I"m so confused because I thought that we pay money by putting it in the baskets that they hand around. We put in five bucks each week (I know it's not a lot, but that's what we feel comfortable with right now) and i thought that counts as a financial pledge...but now it sounds like you made a commitment with a treasurer and stuff? Can you please elaborate!
