Movies to avoid watching while pregnant - Page 2

what a great thread!

when i was PG with DS and we still WENT OUT to movies, ha ha ha ha

we saw "pan's labyrinth" which turned out to be not only ultra violent, as a bonus it had a horrifying death in childbirth/agony labor scene and ended with the death of a child.

whoo! that was a great one. not!

Heh-- I watched Pan's Labryinth when not pregnant, and absolutely loved it (although cried at the end).

Don't know if I would feel the same way in current emotional state.

Why in the hell would ANYONE want to watch this? Pregnant or not? I don't understand what people see in movies like this AT ALL. sick.

Oh man, are they remaking that movie?? The original was pretty awesome, the parent's revenge was spectacular, but I hear you about these sorts of movies, garbage in, garbage out!

Yeah, I was gonna say Pan's Labyrinth too.

Also, nothing to do with pregnancy, but definitely about sacrificing for your child: I'm fairly sure were I to watch Dancer in the Dark right now I'd get so hysterical I'd go straight into labor.

I wish I had warning on The Bridge to Terabithia before I watched it the other day! OMG! I went into it thinking "Good family fantasy movie" HA!! Balling my eyes out with absolutely no warning what so ever that something bad was going to be happening. Parents should not watch this movie, especially pregnant ones. :

oh man, I know. read the book. Its one of my favorites of all time (the movie with its special effects killed the simple story IMO). but don't expect not to bawl. but I still think its one of THE BEST books of all time.

DH and I read books on roadtrips and sometimes I just read outloud to him while he drives. I was literally sobbing at the end. He was like "are you ok?" hahaha.

I've loved that book since I was in elementary.

XOXO

I wish I hadn't watched Slumdog Millionaire.

I cried during the movie, sure, but afterward, walking to the car, I sobbed and sobbed. and sat in the car sobbing some more.

Yes it's a happy movie in the end, but he loses his mommy at one point and it just kills me to think about it.

ohhh, the mention of Pan's Labyrinth reminded of another movie by the same filmmakers called The Orphanage. Definitely not one to watch while pregnant. The ending is very sad.

I agree! Silly movie, and no payoff at the end (you never get to see the baby). Turns out my due date is the same as hers in the movie, heh!

I can't think of any movies off hand to avoid. Some of those Discovery Health Channel shows make me cry, especially the ones where the mother notices the baby is no longer kicking, and she has to go through labor & delivery to have a stillborn. So incredibly devastating.

I went in to The Changeling (pregnant) thinking it was going to be about a corrupt police system and a woman fighting to be heard even though she was a woman. I don't know what I thought about the little boy.

I was so sickened and disturbed by that movie, that I couldn't sleep for a few days. I wanted to walk out, but they kept making it seem like they were going to find him, and I just wanted to see a happy ending. Wish I'd known it was a true story, and I would've looked it up ahead of time and stayed away.

Another vote for Pan's Labyrinth. Great movie, but I couldn't handle the violence while pregnant. Didn't know this 'till I watched it...pregnant.

i am kind of impressed with how well versed we are in movies!

cool.

p.s. the entire theatre was shell shocked coming out of pan's labyrinth. the ads made it seem like lord of the rings but it was not! a good/great movie to be sure but super duper dark. i envision people renting it with their kids and being horrified?!

Yeah... DEFINITELY not something for a young child. Visually fascinating, though, for all of the disturbing images and violence of it.

I absolutely adore Pan's Labyrinth, and was expecting a dark fantasy, which is NOT AT ALL what it turned out to be. And there's no way I'd watch it when pregnant.

And all the hate on horror movies makes me sad. Some horror movies are utterly brilliant (The Exorcist, 28 Days Later, as examples), though I agree that the recent torture porn trend is disgusting. I grew up watching good horror, and I refuse to watch stuff like that. It saddens me that movies like Saw are defining the genre now, when it so doesn't have to be that way!

oh Juno was very hard for me to watch pregnant. I get sort of teary even thinking about it. Its a great movie, I think, and my husband kept saying, "but its a happy end" but I seriously cried for almost an hour!

Otherwise I've been WAY too busy to be watching movies anyway and our TV has been phased out (thank goodness).

But I am a total sop pregnant. I saw a goodwill truck with a billboard on the side about a dad and his son with down syndrome and I was crying. I heard a radio report about school lunch programs packing "backpacks" of food to send home on the weekends for kids and I was crying. stuff like that- I'm just waaaay to sensitive to everything! I'd be wreck at a movie like Pan's Labyrinth (which I really loved).

Just skimmed, don't know if anyone's mentioned it, but The Astronaut's Wife (Johnny Depp, Charlize Theron). Not bad, in fact, it's a really good thriller, and normally I'd recommend it (though not family friendly), but while pregnant... noooooo.
I would not watch The Exorcist, pregnant or otherwise, but especially not while pregnant. I had so many nightmares while pregnant.

I would avoid anything about a man cheating on his partner.

Im going to have to say Life is Beautiful.......Im not normally a movie cryer but omg that was such a sad movie. I wouldnt watch any war movie actually while pregnant, I cant even stand to watch most war movies anyway. To know that alot of it actually happened for real is too much.

I agree with Pans Labrynth. I went into that movie thinking it was going to be a kids fantasy and came out horrified that there were actually kids in there!!

I have only seen a couple of those movies but if you are talking about books, I can say Middlesex is kind of disturbing because the mom is afraid something is wrong with her baby because, well, I don't want to give it away and while I wouldn't consider anything wrong with the baby the baby did turn out to have quite some unusual traits... but the book Sophie's Choice is really great. I have not seen the movie.

Not sure about movies (brain fart) but I can tell you what BOOKS not to read:

Midwives by Chris Bojalian
and
Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult

SUPER bad news and I found out the hard way! The second one? CERTAINLY don't read it once the baby comes, either, That was my mistake.
