Wool covers leaking

Ok so I knitted and crocheted some wool covers and pants. I lanolinized them per some instructions from the yahoo wool soaker group. Dd is 2 wks old and they leak. I thought wool was supposed to be leakproof?

What kind of wool did you use?

Leaking or wicking? There is a big difference in the two. Wicking can occur if you are putting cotton or other natural fiber clothing on over the wool, the cotton will pull the moisture out of the wool.

You could also have compression leaking, which will happen when the diaper/wool is compressed(like in a carseat, a sling, etc)

And wool, while moisture resistant, is not moisture proof.

Properly lanolized wool covers shouldn't wick moisture, but they can leak. Are your baby's clothes ending up wet a little bit after she pees or is there a stream of urine pouring through diaper, cover, and clothing as she pees? If it is streaming through, you need more absorbancy in the diaper portion of your ensemble.

I used paton's merino wool
the clothing is a little wet after a bm or after she pees. But maybe I need more absorbancy in the dipe.
Maybe they are wicking through to her clothes.

Joy has knitted soakers with Paton's Merino wool and hasn't had any problems with leaking. If we don't change Lindsay or Parker soon after they pee or poop, there can be conpression wicking. Leaking can occur if the clothing come into contact with the diaper itself. Or you need more absorbant diapers. You might need to strip your diapers if this is a new problem. Also crocheted soakers can be less dense than a knitted one or one made from a felted sweater. We have to be careful of the soakers I crochet from patterns from the 60s and 70s. They are designed to be used over plastic pants or disposibles. Also if this is your newborn, the diapers can be leaking through the leg holes because of her skinny newborn legs. We found that the wraps worked better on newborns than the pull on soakers.
