You guys might have already talked about this but I want to get a wrap but I have no idea what kind to get. I really like the woven fabric and I was also told that stretchy is the way to go. Feeling a little confused. Anyone experienced with wraps have any strong opinions?

I think that most wrap gurus will tell you that woven wraps are the way to go, that they are the best wrap. I am pretty sure that is true, and when babe is a bit older, I will be getting a woven wrap (prob. a didy.) Now I have only used a stretchy wrap for little babies, so I do not have any other exp. I made several wraps out of stretchy cotton fabric from Joanns, and i loved them soooo much! I am a diy kinda gal, so I also bought some cotton gauzey fabric, and made a wrap out of that. I love that one as well. I only used them for the first year or so, and they were very comfy and supportive. No back pain or anything
I just think that for itty bitty ones, that stretchy would be a bit nicer

i have favored different wraps at different times. when my son was very young i loved my moby because it was so snugly but as he got bigger it was not supportive enough. i switched to woven wraps. i think the biggest thing with woven wraps is to get one you like the looks of. and as you learn more you may get more wraps or sell one or trade it for a different one. wraps come in so many lengths and made out of so many different materials it can be a bit overwhelming and confusing. until very recently my favorite wrap was a smaller storch but now that my son is bigger i find myself prefering to wear him on my back in a "double hamock" i think thats what it is called. anyhow i need a longer wrap and i have been using a merry carry but it is to gripy for the way i am wrapping so i may sell or trade to get a wrap that is less grippy soon. ok sorry i have rambled so much probably someone who is much better at writing than i am and more knowledgable will come along soon!

I really love my moby for the newborn stage. It's also way easier to figure out than the woven wraps if you're new to wrapping (the stretch gives you some leeway). That being said, I'd love a nice woven wrap for an older baby. I have one I made, but it's not as comfortable as my mei tai.

Woven are more versatile. My personal favourite kind of depends on my mood, colours i'm wearing, tasks at hand, and how sleepy ds is.
I use my Walter's Organic 3.2 and either my Girasol Earthy Rainbow 3.6 or my Didy Sequoia Waves 4.6 or both every day. I use my very long Storch Albert when I need cheering up and/or am walking a long distance but don't plan on switching ds from front to back very frequently. I use my GM BBB (or did or will again) on very hot days or when the colours go better with my outfit than my nicer wraps. I use my DIY crinkle cloth when i remember it or want to practice with something inexpensive that another mama might need to use exclusively for financial reasons.
Yea, that's a lot of wraps but i don't own a stroller, playpen, crib, high chair, baby bath, exersaucer or other expensive baby gear that some people consider necessities, so i'm not going to feel guilty about indulging and enjoying my wraps.

For a newborn, I love stretchy wraps. But once my DS hit around 4-6 months (he was a chubster) I started looking for a woven wrap. So yeah, a woven wrap is definitely most versatile and definitely still comfortable for wearing a newborn. If you were only going to get one wrap and wanted it to last all of your babywearing years, I'd go with a woven.
But if you are open to getting more than one, I'd get a stretchy for the beginning and a woven down the line (or both in the beginning!).

In what ways is the woven wrap more versatile? I loved my cuddly wrap when ds was teeny, but he's 9 months now, almost walking, and about 19 lbs. I don't find a lot of positions work well anymore, but I like the fact that the wrap goes over both my shoulders, unlike the maya ring sling I also use.
What am I missing out on by not having a woven wrap?

With a woven wrap, you can do back carries. I know there are instructions on doing back carries with a stretchy wrap, but you don't get the support needed on a stretchy wrap when using it for back carries. It's really better to switch to a woven wrap (homemade or bought) when you need to do back carries. Also, with woven, you normally get much more support as baby gets heavier. And another cool thing is that you can use a short wrap (especially handy when your little one is walking or up and down alot) to do quick carries and yet use less fabric to do so. I really thought I'd be using my stretchy wrap a lot more with my newborn, but instead, I'm reaching for my short wraps to do rebozo style carries and for long woven wraps for two shoulder front carries.

in one word YUP!! I love stretchy wraps for little babies but once they hit over 15- 19lbs you can't beat a good woven wrap for anything! I like a lot of different brands, but I still use my Storch the most, I love that fact that I can wrap my 30lb 2 yr old for long ( like over 3 hours) periods of time without adjusting it, and I LOVE the fact that it can be washed and dried in the dyer, Didys just don't like the dryer (they shrink) and I am hard on wraps, we wear them in the barn, in the mud , when we are chasing horses and when we are milking cows. My Storch is over 5 yrs old and has gone through 3 babies at this point and it still looks new but feels soft and floppy and is a dream to wear. One good woven wrap is worth its weight in gold IMHO! check out www.cottoncradles.com they have a return section or secondhand store and you can find some great deals on used or returned wraps!! Good Luck

I have a Merry Carry (it's a woven wrap like storch, girasol, etc.) that I really like. It became really really soft very quickly and it's quite supportive with my 26 lb 19 month old. It only comes in one length (4.9 m) and it has a limited color selection, but it is less expensive than some other brands. Any good woven wrap will last longer support wise than a stretchy, though I hear they are very comfy for little babies as others have said
