So, do you think he will be widely publicizing this study?

Bailey et al have conducted a prospective study in Bungoma, Kenya to assess the safety of male circumcision practices in both clinical and traditional settings.

In this study, 1,007 males underwent circumcision and were interviewed after surgery to determine complication rates and satisfaction levels.
Quote:
Overall complication rates were high in both groups: 35.2% among the traditional circumcisions and 17.7% among the clinical circumcisions (P <0.001).
Quote:
Wounds had not healed by postoperative day 60 in 24% of the traditional and 19% of the clinical cases.

An estimated 6% of procedures resulted in permanent adverse sequelae.

we need to get the word out on this because the procircs who did this study are going to hush it up big time!

I dont know - just the fact that the study was done in Kenya i think it looses some credibility.

Bummer, because I'm sure the complication rates here are just as high.

But they are using African studies to show "benefits" in protecting against HIV, etc, aren't they?

I'm not surprised by this at all (partly because he went to press about it before it was published as usual).

He's the same guy who did one of the big Africa trials linking HIV to intactness. Now he says we've got to do these cuts the Western medicalized way or double the chance of complications. It all points to the same thing - selling circumcision to Africa.

I think you're right. People will find any excuse to downplay the study; and being in an "unsanitary country" is an easy one. At the very least, maybe that will deter some Kenyans to stop...? I hope so!

I wonder why they're so 'hesitant' to research this on human infants. I wouldn't doubt that the research would come out with even higher rates of complication, including DEATH.

I recall reading that in the UK it was a research study such as that that ended circumcision. People prefer to stay ignorant on this issue here in the US.

Since the study was with adults you bet they will use it to state why its so important it be done in infancy. Spin....

I am afraid jessigh1 is right. Why else would they publish this study?

I thought they were trying to make the case for "more medicalized, less traditional' circumcision. I don't see genital surgery on infants in third world countries (where many of them already don't survive due to lack of breastfeeding, sanitation, etc.) as being a safer option.
