Not sure how to date pregnancy

Thread Starter
I got pregnant during my second cycle after my period returning (nursing an almost 15 month old). My cycle was extra long last month 40+ days. If I go by my last period I would be 6 weeks along, however I know that is not accurate. When I talked to my OB, after he ran some HCG he thinks I am early around 4 weeks, but he wasnt completely sure. He then said "schedule an appt in about a month." Should I be more pushy with trying to determine how far along I am or wait and see if he can tell by examining me in a few weeks. I know its easier to date a pregnancy early in pregnancy through ultrousound and I dont want people to start using the date of my last period which will always cause me to measure small and spark concern. Is it a big deal to not know how far along exactly you are??

I am in a very similar boat. I think I ovulated more than a week, later than the average, though I wasn't charting to know for certain. I didn't get even the faintest positive pregnancy test until cycle day 34 (and I'd had a faint positive just 10 dpo with dd2). Since I delivered past 41 weeks with my first two babies, I really don't want to go by my lmp, because then people will be getting twitching about going too late, but with an inaccurate date.

I'm planning on getting a dating ultrasound after I think I'm about 7 weeks. I know they can't be precise, especially since you have to account for human error with measuring, but I'm betting that my date will be adjusted from my lmp due date.

I was reading that the baby is just so darn small very early on, that they don't even usually show up on an ultrasound before 5 weeks.

I had an early u/s w/ DD (after irregular AFs) which saved my butt. Later u/s showed she was measuring big, and if I hadn't had the early u/s my OB said she would have moved my EDD. Thankfully they didn't and she came fully cooked!

It is a big deal bc if docs think you are past your due date at the end, they start pushing induction or c-section, definitely by 42 weeks, often by 41 weeks. So you want to make sure they don't think you're overdue. IMO, better to underestimate and they might think the baby's a bit early when born, than overestimate and be pressured/forced to deliver early.

Early sonos often help with measurements, tho they can't be exact. Or if you think you know your O day more or less, subtract 14 days from that to get your "first day of LMP" for them to use.

Small and "normally" growing babies are much less a concern than big ones who don't seem to want to come out. I don't htink that at this point the EDD could be put that far off to change anything in any dramatic direction

I would put in a duedate calculator, that you cycle length was Cycle day that you O'ed plus 14.

Like if you O'ed on CD26 then I would put cycle length 40 days. That will give you a better idea.
