My first sewing project

Ok, please don't make fun of me, this is the very first thing I have ever sewed in my entire life. I have always been terrified of the needle in the sewing machine but I took a deep breath and look what I made!! I know it's a little crooked, and there are obvious issues with it but i'm still so proud of myself I can hardly stand it.

I cut 6x6'' squares of DS's shirts from when he was born to when he was a year and made him a baby quilt. The square in the middle with his name is from a baby blanket my OBGYN's office sent me. I sewed over the OB's name on purpose because A) he didn't deliver Toby and B) He was an idiot.

What do you think? Does it look ok for a very first time ever project? I think it is something Toby will have and love for years and years. At least, I hope so.

What a great idea! I love it! My first (and so far only) project looked no where near that good!

Wow what a lovely quilt! My fist project was nowhere near as ambitious nor as memorable.....

What will you sew next?

No one is going to make fun of you! That's a terrific first project to tackle, it looks remarkable for a first project.

My first project was a sundress. One side of the bodice came down to my waist and the other side was at nipple height. It was frightful!

Your doing fabulous. Keep sewing, it's so much fun isn't it?

It's WAY fun! I broke two needles making that quilt and even though it scared the snot out of me, I'm not shaking in terror as I try to feed the material through the needle anymore. My next project is another quilt, this one is going to be full or queen size ( thought I only had enough fabric for a full but I'm finding out I have waaaaay more material than i thought!) It's going to be denim and this really cute blue/brown/white fabric I have in alternating squares. Nothing too ambitious like making actual patterns, but still challenging.

I want to get to the point where i can sew clothes for DS and maybe me... though to be honest I could live in a T-shirt for the rest of my life and be happy I really want to make DS a stuffed puppy and am trying to figure out how to make the idea in my head translate to paper/fabric. Hmmm...

Thanks mamas! :

Were you using a denim needle? Also if you pull (the material out the back as you feed it) it can make the needle deflect, you just want to be steering the fabric not forcing it through in either direction. Needle deflection is absolutely frightening, I had one go in my eye once. I sit with my face farther back now.

I also wanted to tell you how brave you are, using so many different types of fabric and many that are notoriously difficult to sew with, after this you'll be able to handle anything!
