leaky fuzzibunz...

i am new to the world of cloth diapers but chose to use fuzzibunz based on their reviews and what some of my mama friends suggested. i put them on 7-8lb newborn DS yesterday and they leaked leaked leaked. i tried doubling the insert thing (i dont know the proper terms but it was an extra white thing to soak up pee) and that didn't have any effect at all. also, at one point he peed straight up and out of the diaper because his penis was pointing up - like the diaper barely even got wet!

is this because i am doing something wrong? they feel pretty snug on him but obviously there is room for things to come out. we cosleep and as much as i love it, waking up with breastfed baby poop all over my arm was not the loving, bonding moment i want with my baby!!!

i caved and bought some disposables until i think these will fit him better. is that the problem? is he too small right now? should i go buy more things to put on the inside of the diaper to soak up pee? (inserts?)

he looks soooo cute with cloth diapers and the disposables we bought stink! please help.

It does sound like a sizing issue, I think.

What size are the diapers? Offhand, I tend to think that only x-small sized fuzzi bunz would fit a 7-8lb baby. I have a lot of small fuzzi bunz and they would definitely leave a little newborn swimming! I'm not sure about the OS fuzzi bunz since I don't have any of those, but lots of mamas seem to feel that OS diapers don't usually fit newborns well-- they recommend waiting until 6 weeks or so (depending on how quickly your little one grows) to start getting a good fit.

hey thanks for the help! the diapers are sized small, but i can't remember (due to having a newborn) if the lb for this size started at 7 or 8 or what. the snaps felt like they were really snug but when i saw his pee shoot out the top i realized they aren't fitting like they need to!

he'll be fine in disposables for this little while i suppose. i'm glad to hear that CD will likely work out for us thanks!

Yep they are definatly too big. My guy didn't fit into size smalls till he was 6mo old! Its the chicken legs that keep em from getting that good snug fit you need to prevent leaking.

Another thought-- have the inserts been correctly prepped? Brand-new inserts won't absorb until they've been washed on HOT and dried several times. It can take as many as 5 washes to get them so that they'll absorb. So you might try that.

Have you been using rash cream, or using fabric softener? Both will put a coating on the fleece of the diaper, causing it to repel pee instead of absorbing. You can wash the diaper by hand with dish soap to get that coating off.

Finally, you really do have to point his little penis downward. I have had way more trouble diapering my son than I ever had with my girls, because of the pee being all up in front.

i had dd in small FBs at 2 weeks old and they worked great. She was nearly 8lbs though with chunky legs (for a newborn anyway!). I learned the hard way too with my ds that you have to point the penis down when diapering....so that's one thing you should do for sure.

I currently have some of the new one-size FBs and they are wonderful; I can imagine that they would have been great if I had them when dd was newborn. You can adjust the waist & the legs.
