Another back carry question

Thread Starter
I have a mei tai and it works well for front and hip carries with my 7-month-old, but I tried putting him on my back the other day and after just a few minutes my shoulders were hurting and it kept feeling like the straps were going to fall off my shoulders. I'm probably just doing it wrong, anyone have any easy-to-follow instructions for a back carry with a mei tai?

What was probably happening was that your LO was too far down on your back so the weight was being pulled down on your shoulders rather than distributed evenly. How are you getting him up there? Are you doing the hip scoot or the superman toss - I have found that for younger babies it is easier to get them higher using the superman (or santa if you prefer) toss. Babies head should be resting just inbetween your shoulders. The part of the MT where the straps join with the body of the carrier should be sitting no lower then your shoulder blades - the higher it is sitting - the more supportive it will be.

Which carry were you doing? If it was one with ruck shoulders (like a back pack) then you could tie Tibetan.

I know that's a wrap video, but you can do the same thing with the straps of a MT. The Tibetan part is what she shows after she shows it tied at her waist.
