How do I get a resale/Tax ID number?

I'm not sure this is the right place to ask, but I figured that some of you would have gone through this. I'm looking to start selling some embellished baby/kid clothing, and would love to be able to buy blanks wholesale.

Thanks for any info!

I think you have to register yourself as a small business through the state for an official ID - at least, that's what DH had to do. Otherwise you just use your SS# for paying taxes, but I'm guessing that won't get you the wholesale discount

You should be able to get one from the state. It's different than the number you file taxes with if you hope to file as a corporation (TIN/EIN from IRS). I just ran into this the other day trying to get set up with a wholesaler but my state doesn't issue them because we don't have sales tax.

Ok, you would have to go down to your city hall (double check with your town) and ask for a sellers permit. If you plan on doing business with another name besides your own name, you need a DBA, or Doing Business As. I think the DBA is first, then you get the Resale Number, but for us it was all at city hall, just different offices. Your Tax Id number should be your social security number if you are the sole proprietor, which it sounds like you are. If you have a partner, then you need to do other stuff and then get a tax id number thats not one of your personal ssn.

Ahhh, I remember starting up. Its been 10 years! Geez. How time flies. One word of advice. Do your flippin taxes! Don't let it pile up like I did. UGH.

I googled "PA sales tax license" and found it, all online, for $70. Got the number that day via email.

I was wary of doing it online, entering my social security # onto some unknown website. But is this a legitimate option? Calls to the local town clerk have gone unanswered.

Thanks!

PA has a site specifically for business start-ups called PA Open 4 Business where they have everything you need. It was secure (https). It is in the state's interest to save time and money by doing it online so I would be shocked if MA didn't have something similar.
