My kids love thier blankets and drag them everywhere- so I really like the ones that my gma knits out of carons. I can't knit with acrylic- hurts my hands- so I knit hats/booties/sweaters out of merino (EYhandpaints- it is my LYS and on Ebay) or cascade dolce, or 3IG BFL. I did just knit DS a little cabled hat out of suri merino and it is one of the loveliest things I have ever knitted!
I love the Dreams in Color yarn. It's superwash wool. It's kind of pricey (especially if you maybe need twice as much ) , but so soft and the colors are great. I tend to buy it for baby show gifts
I lurrrrve Debbie Bliss baby cashmerino. Sublime also makes a beautiful blend. I prefer wool for blankets because acrylic can melt in a fire, whereas wool is naturally flame retardant. Knitpicks has some really nice superwash wools for a reasonable price.
I've recently done a bunch of knitting with Bunny Hop by Crystal Palace. It is really easy to knit with and feels soft while still being sturdy. I've washed all the garments I knit, but I can't say how well it wears on baby yet since she isn't here yet.
berocco comfort is great for things that need to be washable - it's an acrylic nylon blend and oh so soft. right now I"m working on a baby surprise jacket in colinette jitterbug and am enjoying the yarn. also like koigu. they're both superwash sock yarns
