what is this book?

I can't remember much, but it is about a kid dying (I think) and it's his father writing or chronicling to him. I think it was written in the 70's. It's a true story. I know that is waaay vague. But I'm hoping someone can follow my stream of conciesness(sp?)...

Kerouac (sp?) wrote a book about a very ill young boy who eventually died. The story was told by his little brother (i think). It's called Visions of Gerard. I don't know if that is what you are thinking of, but it is the only one I can think of that is similar.

OMG - thanks MisaGoat! I just spent about 20 min searching Amazon and couldn't figure it out. It was driving me NUTS (probably worse than the OP)!!
