disposable for first week or so??

Thread Starter
My mom keeps telling me I should get some disposable for the first few weeks. I don't want to but I don't want to NOT just because she is bugging me. She won't even be here then. Also, we are planning on ECing from birth. Am I going to wish I had "easy" disposables?

Agreed. I can't imagine putting a fresh little bottom in scratchy, stinky sposies.

I thought I was going to CD as soon as I brought my daughter home from the hospital so I even refused a free pack of disposables that they offered, but I didn't start CDing until week 5. I was just nervous starting CDing so that was a big factor, but the other thing was that the infant prefolds I had were too big for a newborn. Even 7th gen or Whole Foods brand diapers were too big even though I had the smallest size and the only thing that fit were pampers swaddlers. If I had to do it all over again, I'll probably take as many free disposable as possible from the hospital for the first week or two. You probably want to use sposies for the first week anyway since the baby has meconium and it's too messy to deal w/ on cloth. That stuff is like tar! When I have another baby, I'll probably try to start CDing at week 2 at the earliest and maybe get some smaller diapers than infant prefolds in preparation.

I also refused the petrolatum that they had at the hospital to put on the baby's bum so that meconium comes off easy because I bought a natural butt balm. Next time I'm going to take as many freebies that the hospital offered and that's my advice to you as well! Take the aspirator (even though it says disposable...it works better than the ones at the store) and anything else!

Mec is no big deal at all.

We use kissaluvs for the newborn stage.

:

If anything I would think CDs are actually MORE important in the first few weeks. I started out with sposies with my first and she got terrible diaper rash.

I haven't decided if I'll take my cloth to the hosptial...I was leaning toward not, but I'm thinking I"ll take my mama cloth to the hospital, so I might as well take my baby cloth, too! Still not sure...

I used the disposables for the first three weeks with all my children.

Having more knowledge now about what is in disposables I would probably choose otherwise if I were doing it again.

The first stage they grow so fast.

Good luck

Cd

The birthing center I had dd in actually used cd. They were great & so easy!

I used disposables because I didn't want to have to buy CD's in the tiniest size.

I found CD's overwhelming and impossible even when I tried them @5 weeks old.

Don't feel bad if you want to use sposies. CD's are more work, no matter what anyone tells you. We use cloth now, and I like it- I am not down on cloth. But it doesn't have to be all or nothing.

I am going to use sposies till my LO fits small pockets. My DH will not deal with prefolds, and BTW I am not fan of them either. And I do want DH help, he has no problem changing pockets. Buying anything else than prefolds for NB stage makes no financial sense and then it is lot more work than sposies. Sometimes you just need to compromise. And I rather have more time to rest/eat healthy than to wash diapers at this time as well.

I'm planning on using sposies at least untill the meconium is all passed. Partly because I don't want to deal with the mess; partly because I'm new to CDing, and don't want to fling myself and my DH into it when we're exhausted and sleep deprived and dealing with all the post-partum loveliness.

We never used disposables, but they offered to give us a free pack at the hospital that would have come in handy if we hadn't had a big stash of Kissaluvs 0's that fit her perfectly.

I disagree. We used a few sposies post-hurricane and they were a PAIN. Did nothing at all to hold poop. Went everywhere. I've NEVER had a poop leak with cloth.

Again- mec is no mess. Washes out of cloth- no problem. The mess with mec is wiping it off the marshmallow-y bottoms Much easier with a thick velour or sherpa cloth wipe than a little piece of paper-towel.

We have the same problem when we use disposables. My mom is adamant that she doesn't want to use cloth at her house, but she always tells me about how much ds pooped all over himself. I NEVER have this problem with cloths. Also, I second the merconium not really being big deal. It washed right out without any hassles.

Alegna - I agree that disposables are terrible for holding poop - but I would love to know your secret to NEVER having blowouts with cloth!!! I'm totally envious!

We did use disposables for the first couple of weeks & probably would again. I was torn so badly just moving in bed was a miserable experience & I know dh although ok with cloth would not take care of the cd's. The first few weeks were such a tremendously painful blur for me that doing the minimum was all I could muster.

I use fitteds as newborns (kissaluvs) and then aios later. The closest to blowouts we've had were when the rise was too low. Other than that- the elastic contains well

i want to use my cd from day one, but i have fibro and dont want all my dipes dirty by the time i come home from the birth center. and the only dipes i bought for the new one is infant prefolds and Bummis covers. i cant afford NB prefolds too. my babies are around 8 lb anyway and should be fine in cd after we come home. but i think i will use the free dipes at the BC. DH wont wash dipes anyway. i wouldnt want him too. he knows nothing about it.
