disposable for first week or so?? - Page 2

How about letting your mom buy you some disposables then if you don't use them donate them! This way she will get off your back. Also you will have them on hand if you should decide to use them. Win Win

I will be using Seventh Generation for the first week just because I don't want to add more laundry. After that, I will start using the newborn cloth we have. We used sposies with ds 1 and never had any problems and only one blow out the entire 2 years we used them.

Another thing to remember is how few diapers there are the first few days. 1-2 the first couple of days, then one more a day so around day 3= ~3 diapers etc

It took us a week to have a load to run this time around.

I use disposables for about the first two months, or until the babe is big enough to fit into my cloth diaper stash. (SNugglebottoms and nice covers.) Also, the first 1-2 months I am more tired and don't want extra work, especially with five kids. No way. I just had a c/s and it's been one month now. I'm starting to be able to imagine using cloth in a little while, but definitely not yet. It's a lot of work, especially because I'm pretty anal (no pun intended) about rinsing, pre-soaking and all that to avoid any stains and extra smell. FWIW, I never, ever have a problem with these disposables leaking. It helps that I notice the instant he poops, or one of the kids does.

Anyway, I look forward to CDing again, but I worry about our aging washer and dryer and the extra loads. Last night the washing machine burned out one of its hoses and I'm waiting for the repair guy. CDing won't save us money if we have to replace our washing machine earlier because of the extra wear and tear. But I'm still CDing. I love soft flannel on their baby skin.

Diapers are diapers, I don't find disposables easier or harder then cloth.

I used 'sposies in the hospital simply because I didn't want to risk losing my cloth.

I bought one pack of Tushies disposables for the first week for this baby. I did the same with dd1 and it was no prob switching for me or babe! They are the wood pulp and non-chlorine kind. (I also keep them on hand for the people in my life who refuse to cd)

I wouldnt be scared of cding right from the beginning either! You can do it!!!

We used disposables for the first week or two. Not having to do laundry at this special time imo was nice. In the first week I was changing her dipes every hour or so with lots of poopy ones too. Once we started at about 2 weeks I loved her small FBs and she wasn't pooping 3-5 times a day at that point. I prefer cloth for sure, but I don't regret using disposables for the first week.

I used disposables the first week, simply because I was in hospital and the sposies were free there
and the first couple of days, it was the nurses who changed dd's diaper (I had a c-section and couldn't do much the first 3 or so days).
I never saw any meconium - it had all passed by the time I changed her diaper for the first time. I started using CD as soon as we got home, but I don't know how easy or hard meconium is to wash out.

Cloth vs sposie isn't like bm vs formula. It isn't going to ruin your "cloth relationship" if you have sposies on hand. Unlike if you have formula on hand, it could ruin your bfing r/s. No matter what, you or somebody from your house will be running out to get things you thought you had or didn't need at first and now you do. If you decide to you want to try sposies, then go out and buy them afterwards. I'd just tell your mom "You know, I really think we'll be ok without them. But if I change my mind, the store is just a few blocks down and I can get some then." If she wants to buy some, let her. You don't have to use them.

FYI - Disposables in the hospital aren't free. It's the opposite. Check your itemized bill for how much they charged you for the disposables. Pretty much nothing in the hospital is free. Use a kleenex, they charge you the box. Use a disposable, they charge you the whole thing. I don't recall what the diapers were, but my "Mom's releif bag" with hosp. strength tylenol, ibuprofen, and stool softeners was something like $700 before insurance.

Eep, yeah you have a point.

I can't remember if the diapers were charged for seperately on my bill, but I'm sure you do pay for them somehow.

I guess I should have said: you pay for them anyway, so you might as well use them! (and take the ones left in your room when you leave, otherwise they are thrown out when the room is cleaned)

We CDd right from the beginning and we've never looked back.

If you are truly concerned about mec, if you have the presence of mind and remember to do so, you can coat baby's bum with some olive oil and/or use flushable liners in the cloth while the mec works its way out.

Cloth *IS* easy.

i have never seen a charge for dipes on the bill. i always thought they were free b/c it was a way for the company to advertise. parents would think how nice they were and that the hospital must endorse them etc, and want to buy more. The birth center we used with DD handed out pampers newborn. i thought it was just the same thing they did with formula, only i turned down the formula.

Correct me if I'm wrong - Olive Oil is ok on the bum if you are using prefolds/fitteds that have cotton inners, but anything else will cause build up, right? So diapers with fleece and suedecloth are a no-no unless you use a liner.

Nah- olive oil should be okay on anything...

Angela is right - meconium didn't stain - it's wiping it off the bum that is so hard. Definitely coat the bum with olive oil first.

We used KL0s from the get-go and they worked great. We had a very heavy wetter and so had to change her every hour and would have gone broke with sposies.

We brought home the sposies from the hospital, and have been given several packages of sposies. We used them all the time until the mec passed. Now (she's just over a week old), we're doing cloth during the day and sposies at night... just using what we have.

We have said we intend to keep a package of sposies on hand, just in case. I don't know when we'd need them, but DH feels better if we have some on hand. I will say, she leaks poop almost everytime she poops in a sposie and we've yet to have a CD leak. We use prefolds.

We used cloth on my neice ( my sister and I lived together) She was TINY. he got down to 5 pound 8 ouncess and stayed there for a LONG time. We used a little bity diaper with yellow edging. It was the perfect size paired up with a snappi. We had several happy hieny small, but they were way to big and never really fit her well.

We used the cloth in the hospital with her and despite what some say it was a bid deal to us. We ended up laying toilet paper inside the dipe to act as a barrier. No cover. THey were to big.

Looking back cloth diapering her was just a simple as putting on a pamper. And if you use cloth wipe jut throw everything in the pail. So simple my 2 year old can cloth her baby dolls now.

Personally, I am not going to stress about this. I have some newborn prefolds. I am going to get some used covers for cheap. It's not much of an investment lost. I can alway resell them, whether I use them or not.
If I use them I use them. If I don't feel up to it, I will use disposies until I am back on track. I know that after a week or 2 I will probably be up to the teeny tiny bit of extra work that CDs are.
