Newborns and Ergos

Is an insert necessary or can you make one by rolling a towel up? We're trying to save money where possible.

Also, at what age can they go on your back? Thanks.

I didn't have an insert, but I was putting her in it with a thick fleece blanket folded like the insert would be, at about a month old.

I put her on my back for the first time about two weeks ago, but I think I could have done it sooner. The hard part is getting her butt down all the way. She likes to hold herself up by her armpits. I'm not entirely sure I'm using the right technique; I suppose I should watch the video again.

5.5 months, btw.

we have the insert, but I see no reason why you couldn't use something else... wish I'd thought of that

I think they can go on back (and front without insert) as soon as they have head control and can splay their hips.

Cheers, enjoy you're Ergo

I used a folded baby blanket for the the first several times (at age 2 weeks) I did end up getting an insert though... not as much to fold or bunch and the roll at the top provides a bit better head support. Not a huge diff though..

You could deffiently use a folded, thick baby blanket!! I even put my LO in there without the insert or blanket. Just play with it and see what is comfy and secure for you both.

or one of those swaddle blankets that you can velcro. just make sure the baby's head is supported by rolling a fold with the blanket under the neck area.

DD is 5 wks and we've used the Ergo from day one without the nb insert ... we use a thick fleece blanket folded in half, with baby sandwiched in the middle, legs off to the one side like the video says. DD loves it! And her head is stabilized with the fold of fleece.

Our LO went on my back at 3 mos. She had no trouble flexing her hips and I'm thin enough that she didn't have to go really wide. See no reason why you'd need to use the insert if you find something else that works! I don't think you'd need one very long any way.

In the Ergo?!? Please tell me how you positioned your LO, I would love to get my LO off my front and onto my back!!! My friend is from Madegascar and is going to have her mom teach me how to use and African wrap to put my LO on my back. Unfortunatly that's not until April.... I am pretty small so I think I may be able to get him on my back in the Ergo. Would love your tips!

I don't have an ergo, want one though. I have a good friend who uses hers with her newborn, no insert.
