WOOHOO!! My Cali "philosopical exemption" was FINE... but it could have been UGLY

We have a weird thing in my school district in which there are not enough spots for all the students IN the district to get into their local school. So the night before Kindergarten registration? The Dads (and it's almost always the Dads) camp out to be the first in line when registration opens... (this year anyone there after 3:30 am was in trouble)

But then, they give you a number and you have to come back so they can inspect your paperwork.. at least USUALLY. I figured I would go back at noon or something and handle it.

But DH was there really early last night (9pm) and they took and inspected his paperwork at 9am.

We selectively vax, but obviously list NO vaxes and just sign the vax exemption neatly written on the back of the form. I THOUGHT I would be turning in the form but LUCKILY I have mentioned a FEW times to DH that there is no such thing as a partial - exemption. More LUCKILY? He listened!

The nurse looked at the form (listing no vaxes) , flipped it over, read the exemption and asked DH "So, has your daughter had ANY vaccines?"

DH said he felt like it was a potential trap either way!! He was fairly certain that he was supossed to say "NO VAX" but then he thought "well maybe like the polio is REQUIRED or something"

SO his reply:

"we are philosopically opposed to vaccinations"
the nurse asked again "but have you EVER vaxed"

he replied. "we are philosopically oppsed to vaccinations, as to the details? I don't go to the doctor visits, you may ask my wife"

Not the BEST answer but good enough!!

Is CA an all or nothing state? I know CO you can have a philosophical exemption to selected vaccines.

Congrats on a smooth ride into school.

I'm fairly certain it is...

It would have been fine. The wording on the California form says "all or some of the immunizations are against my beliefs."

I'm shocked your district hasn't hired more K teachers since they have a problem where children can't go to their"home" school.

CA is not a all or nothing state.

My 5yr old was fully vaxed til 3yrs or so and was missing a few from the so called list the school wanted them to have for K, i gave them her vax record and a signed waiver and nothing was said.

CA is not all or nothing. Sounds like the nurse was being a busybody.

Where can you find out if your state is all or nothing? (Alabama here)

Whether or not you have "ever" vaxed is none of her business and you can feel free to tell her so.

Yep. Whatever happened to medical privacy? It seems that all medical records are "private" EXCEPT for vaccines. Vaccines are immune to this...go figure.

It seems that California is not an all or nothing state. Sometimes, however, nurses ask whether or not the child has had any vaccinations because if they have had some they may not have to miss school in case of an outbreak. I don't think she was trying to trick your dh into anything, but you never know, so I completely understand why he answered that way.
