i found that the best thing when my kids want to see what's going on is to put them in a high back carry in a mei tai - that way they can see over your shoulder, and you can still wear them comfortably. and then if they get sleepy they can just rest their head on your shoulder. facing out their head can drop and constrict their airway.

I was going to say exactly this.

I'd also suggest trying a hip carry if your dd wants to be able to see what's going on. Riding on your hip gives a lot of visibility.
The other problem with facing directly out is that the baby has no choice but to face out, and can't turn away to check in with the parent, or avoid stimulation, etc. High back carries or hip carries allow the baby to turn away or put her head down to sleep.
