help! my sewing machine is acting weird

So I got a new brother (xl-3750) last holiday season. Its been wonderful, though I haven't used it a ton. Its still in pretty new condition. Until today. something went wrong, and I have no clue what! I don't want to take it to a sewing machine repair person or shop (nor do I know where to find one) but I don't know what else to do. So I'm asking here.

What I know: I was sewing along at a reasonable speed, with pins perpendicular to the line I was sewing. The bobbin was very low on thread but I figured i would just run out then rewind it, no problem. all of a sudden, I'm out of bobbin thread, the feed isn't working and the pin I just sewed over is sticking at a really weird angle. Like it were stuck in the machine. I raise the foot, bring up the needle, and remove the peice with little problem. the bobbin is empty, so I took it out. The pin is only the head half of the pin. Whats left is bent in the middle, the end sort of pointed but also dull. The other half of the pin is missing. I thought it might have fallen into the machine, so I unscrewed the plate with a nickle, and gently wiggled it off. I tilted the machine and the screws and nickle fell into the machine, but I got the screws out. The nickle is floating around in an "empty" part of the machine. That is, there seems to be no machinery near it. I look around some more for the pin, assume it flew somewhere else, and close up the machine. I wind the bobbin with no problems. (the bobbin winds on top of the machine, and the needle and feeder thing doesn't move while its being wound.) I put the wound bobbin in and use the little needle raiser thing to try to bring the bobbin thread up. the thing is very sticky, and resistant, and unsmoothly, when usually it is very smooth. I try "sewing" a little when its not in bobbin winding mode, and it just doesn't sound right. There is nothing in particular that is telling me its off from the sound, but its not right. Also, the thread gets stuck a lot, and the bobbin thread will not catch. Normally on this machine both of these are very easy to do.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? What should I do? do I need to take it in to be serviced? how much about will this cost me? how do I find a good place to do so? (I'm in the sf bay area). thank you

If you are brave, I would personally take out the whole bobbin "home" and see if the pin part is still in there, sounds like it may be to me. I would also replace my needle with a new one, check my needle plate for any burrs that may be catching and if so, file down with a diamond type emery board. I would put all back together, flip over and unscrew the bottom under and take out my nickle, only because I'm anal and it would bother me being in there, not because it's harming anything.

With out knowing your machine, or seeing things for myself, this is the best advise I can give. If you are still having issues, I'd contact "brother" via email or phone and ask what they advise, being prepared for them to wig out if you let them know you took it apart yourself. If it's under a warranty, and you care, then don't open it and try to fix it yourself and just call them first.

For future reference, I'd not sew "over" pins; either pull them before you reach them, or place them farther over so you aren't sewing over them.

Thanks. I haven't a clue how to take out the bobbin case but I'll look and see if I can figure it out.

WOOT! I took it apart a bit more this time and got the pin out! yay!!! thank you

re: the sewing over pins thing, I might not do that anymore. Its how my mom taught me to sew though, that it was fine to sew over pins if they were perpindicular, so it may take a LOT of getting used to to change that, but I'll see if I can.

Sounds like you bent your needle. Which is very likely to happen if you stitch over your pins. A lot of people do it, even I do it at times, because it's easier, but it's not the best of ideas. If you have a long stitch and are going at a slower speed, it's usually not a problem, but with a short stitch or going at full clip, the needle will drive right into the pin, break the pin, and bend the needle. Even slightly bent needles do not sew right. Replacing it should be fairly simple though, since they're made to be replaced regularly.

it looks perfectly straight (I took it out and examined it, thinking that it might have bent the needle) and it is sewing just fine now that I took the pin out of the bobbin case. I don't think the needle is a problem.

Glad you fixed it!! Generally it's a good idea to change your needle if you do something like sew a pin , but I'm guilty of not always swapping out my needles when I "ought to". I learned the hard way, just like you, not to sew over pins. It is hard to change that habit.
