What worked for us was Bio-Kleen oxygen bleach plus. I picked mine up at my local health food store. Short of boiling that was the only thing that worked, I'm assuming it is because of the grape fruit seed extract. I use the bio-kleen and Charlies for every wash and make sure to strip my diapers once every month or so and the ammonia smell has been staying away. That being said, I do think that my dipes would benefit from a good boiling. I can't wait 'till summer when I can set them all out in the sun. Good Luck, I hope this helps. Alicia

How do your dipes smell after they're washed? Any issues there too - or is it just the nighttime diaper smelling very strongly in the a.m.?

They don't smell at all coming out of the wash so I have no idea what the issue is!!

Have you tried soaking your dipes in the easher with Biokleen Bac-Out. That stuff is a miracle product. Soak overnight, then wash as usual.

I keep some in a spray bottle on the changing table, and I spray poopy diapers before I put them in the pail. Never a stinky since.

I had a strong ammonia smell in my bg inserts only after dd wet. they smelled clean out of the wash. what I did was soak the inserts in a 5gal bucket w/ a very strong vinager & water mix for a few hours. I rinsed & washed as normal & no more stink.

I've had VERY good results with Bum Genius Odor Remover.

Okay-- so I have this in my cupboard, but I've never thought to use it to deal with ammonia smells. But it helps???

If the issue is morning ammonia, a vinegar prewash or soak will help.

You can add Calgon to your wash to help counteract the hard water and the buildup it causes.

Or just occasionally buy new microfiber inserts b/c they aren't very expensive.

I use calgon... it doesn't seem to make any difference!

I know it is pain, but I have to resort to boiling my inserts every couple of weeks, it always does the job removing odor. The other method which is less painful is run them in the dishwasher. Just recentley I started adding vinegar to my wash and we will see how it works in couple of weeks, but everything is less staticky and softer now.

I thought that vinegar and hard water was a bad combo? Do you just put it in a downy ball? How much do you use? Also, I heard that if you use vinegar you have to use baking soda??

Have you stripped with JUST hot water?

All of my MF inserts smell clean coming out of the wash, but had that horrible ammonia smell each and every time I changed. I was washing every day because I couldn't stand the smell.

The only thing that worked for me was to wash only the inserts with a fair amount of detergent and some bleach. Not every time, but maybe every couple of weeks. The bleach totally killed whatever was living in those inserts, and I could wash every couple of days once I started doing that.

I have hard water, too - and Calgon sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. I use Planet Liquid on my diapers.

Actually it is either vinegar either baking soda according to this website:
http://www.snap-ez.com/TroubleShooting.html
"To prevent this from happening again, be sure you are using an approved detergent, use vinegar in the rinse OR baking soda in the wash (but DON'T use them both as that cuases odor problems due to build up)(but I recommend vinegar over baking soda)"
Vinegar dissolves minerals, so I think it should be good in hard water conditions.

So if I use vinegar should I just put it in a downy ball?? How much should I use?

I just put mine in the water softener dispenser, same amount as I would of water softener. I guess you could use Downy ball as well.

Once when my inserts got incurably stinky, I'll admit that I did bleach them (just the inserts) and it worked like a charm.

If they're actually clean-smelling after you wash them, it might be enough to run a full wash cycle on hot with no detergent (or if you want to use vinegar, throw 1/2 cup in or something) after you've washed them. I did this weekly when I was having detergent issues, and then kept it up every other month or so and it kept problems like this down a lot.

We had the worst morning ammonia problems with a detergent I ended up having to stop using, FWIW.

What detergent was causing a problem for you? I use powdered Planet and liquid Calgon. Sometime's Charlie's but I'm so discomboomerated from being between houses and staying with my MIL and mom and one uses dryer sheets too much and the other has a FLer that I cannot manhandle the way I'd like to. Argh! Whatever happened to "CDing isn't what it used to be" and "CDing is so easy nowdays"? There's a million options, which is great. But oh so confusing, and I think I've tried just about half. Not really, but I'm stumped. Stink, rash, needing air down there. I recently began sampling fleece and only natural fibers. Wool is next, and I'm looking foreward to that. But with naturals, I can't help but feel the wetness staying against him at all (night, etc.) will only harm him and make the rash worse. Any ideas?
