I've noticed there are a few of us in SE MI!

I'm downriver and my Midwife is in Temperance (south of Monroe).

Well, you know I'm here, Dawn!: We are having the same midwife as Dawn. I just went to her open house today and got a rockin' chair massage from Shelli. For anyone else, I'm between Cabelas (Dundee) and the Ohio line.

We're not in MI anymore, but dh and I grew up there! We go back up to the GR area about 5 or 6 times a year to visit family.

Bumping because we have more DDC mamas.

I spent 29 1/2 years there and my whole family is scattered all across Detroit. Who knows, I may end up back home in the next year or so!

I am in Canton.

DS was born at St. Joes with an OB. He was a csect due to breech presentation.

DD was born at St. Joes with the midwives. It was a pretty great experience except for the fact they they broke my water and I had to be continuously monitored. I think breaking my water was what put me over the edge contraction wise and I ended up with an epidural.

PG with #3 - Would like to consider a HB or The Birth Place but just not sure. Otherwise, I am thinking about the Henry Ford West Bloomfield midwives.

Anyway, I go for an ultrasound on Friday and we are just really praying for a heartbeat!

I am in Ohio, but my midwife is in temperance too. I'm sure it's the same one you guys are talking about, she's going to be busy!:

So when in Nov are you due? Do you go to the Toledo CD or BW group?

I'm due 11/14 as far as I know, I tend to go late though. I am actually a co-leader for the CD group, but have kind of dropped off the face of the planet recently! I'm hoping to be able to get back into the swing of things now that it will be one monthly meeting

I thought your names looked familiar. I'm hoping with the combined groups and times changing back and forth I'll be able to make it to some more meetings. I'm excited to sew some more NB diapers. I go late too. I'm due the 3rd, but I'm shooting for the 13th which is my bday. I'm not sure if I'll make it since I tend to go about a week over.

Katie - I have a question for you....

I noticed in the homebirth thread that you ins is covering your birth with a CNM. Can you give me more info? What ins do you have? We have HAP and not havign coverage is a major reason that hb is out for us. Also, what midwife are you using and can you point me in the direction of how to start looking for one?

TIA! Kelly

I'm not Katie, but we are in similar situations and see the same midwife so I hope you don't mind me jumping in

I have medicaid which covers all but a portion of home/birth center births. I know state insurance only covers CNMs, but I am not sure about other insurances. Your best bet would be to ask the midwife you are considering what insurance, if any, they accept. I'm not sure if there are any other CNM homebirth midwives in this area.

We see Linda Johnson at Mother's Own Birth it's a bit of a hike for me (I'm downriver) but I wouldn't see anyone else. :

When looking for a midwife you can start with the Michigan Midwives Association Directory.

I'm glad to know that medicaid will cover the birth, although it might be different for me with Ohio medicaid... and they are my secondary, but at least it is promising! Linda is a bit of a hike for me too, about an hour or so, but soooooo worth it!

According to her website she has billed and been paid by Ohio medicaid.

Dawn covered a lot of it. Thanks Dawn!: My DH works for the state of Michigan and we have the state employee BC/BS. They pay for CNMs and will pay for the birth with a CNM. And will pay for a homebirth, but only with a CNM (Linda is the only CNM I know of around who does homebirths) They will not pay the facility fee for a birth center because they are not licensed by the state. But the state doesn't license birth centers, so its not like its something that she can get. So its a vicious circle. So it would cost more for me to birth at the birth center (since I would have to pay the facility fee) than to birth at home. Its stupid, but I'm glad, since that put my DH over the top on a homebirth.

For us our insurance pays 100% for a hospital birth, so paying out of pocket is just not reasonable. And DH wasn't okay with paying up front and maybe getting paid, but Linda's billing has figured out that our insurance should pretty much pay for a homebirth. So we should be good.

That being said, I had my first with OBs at St Joes in Ypsi, and babies 2-5 with the CNMs at U of M. They were absolutely wonderful. As natural as you can get and be in a hospital. Last I knew, they had 2 birthing tubs up there and baby #4 was a water birth in the tub, and it was the best birth ever. My only warning about U of M is that they are pretty hardcore about requiring the eye goop. No waivers, no exceptions. Last I knew, they will also not allow a waterbirth if you are GBS+. If that is not a big deal to you, and you need to be where your insurance will cover, but want a birth as close to a HB with a midwife I would highly recommend the U of M CNMs. I have also heard that the new hospital out in West Bloomfield is really nice and has midwives and I have heard good things, but it was from more mainstream mamas, so I'm not sure how midwifey they are IYKWIM. I'm thinking in Canton, U of M or W. Bloomfield are a reasonable distance. (Its a 45 min drive minimum for us to U of M) My last birth, I switched to a CNM practice in Ohio and I was horribly dissapointed. I had some issues, but I was more medically managed than if I had an OB. Yuck! I hope that helps. If you have any other questions I'd be glad to answer them.

I'm in Northville.

I had my last at the Providence ABC, but I have new insurance so I'm looking for a new practitioner.
