my state assistance and circ ed

so i am on our state medicaid for pregnancy (i had no current maternity coverage) and i had to choose a MCO (managed care organization). this MCO sends literature and things to educate parents to be. there is this book they sent me and it has a lot of REALLY obvious info (like changing your baby when it is wet or soiled, that babies cry, etc.), but there was a blurb about circ that actually was really great. it said something to the effect that circing is generally medically unneccesary, has risks, and that ric is not recommended by the aap. i just thought that was really nice to see, as our medicaid program covers ric (though thankfully there are those trying to turn that around), and so many people just do it b/c that's what everyone does. perhaps this blurb will prevent needless suffering in at least a few more babies.

It is good as it's a positive start and better than saying nothing. Although, you'd think since the insurance company acknowledges it's medically unnecessary and isn't recommend by the AAP that they would just not pay for it.

Maybe you could send them a letter and restate what they stated and ask them to drop coverage? After all, parents could still obtain circ if they wanted, it would just be an out of pocket expense (like cosmetic surgery should be). The insurance company could save tons of $.

what state do you live in?

yeah, i thought about why they would say that in their book and still cover it : i think i will write them, though. i have also heard talk of some people and groups legislating to have medicaid not cover circ (in my state). the thing is with the medicaid, you have to choses an MCO. i chose molina. i don't know if the legislation would trickle down to the MCOs at all, but i can't imagine it wouldn't since they are contracted through medicaid.

i live in NM (which is one of the few states where medicaid also covers homebirth).
