We have dust really bad in this house, dirty dust. Probably because I open the windows a lot. (Do you open the windows a lot?) Might come from the dog too, bringing in dirt plus pet dander and such, cat litter dust even though I change it outside, you know all that kind of stuff.

For example I vacuumed my central fan intake 'grill' just a few months ago and it looks TERRIBLE already! I swear it looks like we chain smoke in here, but DH is only allowed to smoke outside, he never smoked very much and he's actually quit since I vacuumed.

Do you use a high-filtration type air filter in your central unit? It makes a difference. That's the only suggestion I have.
We have dog hair anyway, what's a little dust to clean up as well? hehehe

no dogs. we have 2 cats. the cat litter is one of those stupid expensive clean itself litter boxes but its in the basement and there is a door between the basement and the first floor.

no one smokes here...neither inside or out.

I JUST dusted. i tell you..it will be horrible again tomorrow! lol!

We have a bit of a dust issue as well.

We really need our furnace ducts cleaned out, but that is very $$$ and we want to wait until after we remodel our bathroom and get rid of the drywall dust before going whole hog.

If I lift the heat vents out of the floor, I can see dust and debris. I really think I should just remove all the vents and clean/vacuum as best I can.

I can only commiserate with you. I can dust every single day and it looks no different than when I dust once a week or once a month. Yes, I have done studies!!!

it just perplexes me so.....perhaps it is the heating in the house (we have wood stove but do supplement with oil). its just not any different than other houses i have owned, so i just end up scratching my head! lol!

My parents have a wood stove and they have much less dust than me. They also live further away from the street/cars and they almost never open their windows, which is a lot of the reason I think my dust comes in from outside.
Having the windows open makes me happy though, my mom says some people are just "window people" and I guess I'm one of them.

We have a lot of dust too. I honestly don't worry about it that much. We do keep the windows open. But I think in our case, the 3 cats and all the people have the greatest impact on creating dust LOL.

I have electrostatic dusting mitts, and our vacuum has a hepa filter. I think that helps somewhat.

maybe your vacuum cleaner is dying?

I feel there is a ton of dust too. I cannot believe the amount of dust every single day. It drives me mad. I'm very picky and a SAHM so I know that I am being very critical-looking at it every day. I have a roomba and it amazes me what is picks up every day. There is so much dust and hair etc etc. We do have a special dust zapper in our AC unit but not sure it works right. I think the lighting makes a big difference as to how much dust is visible every day. Some homes hide it well but my condo is light and airy so dust can be seen quickly.

I was told about someone's kooky dad who was convinced that all the dust in his house came from disposable paper items (TP, paper towels, tissues, etc). I grinned, but then I realized that the dustiest rooms in my house are the rooms where I use the most kleenex and read the most newspapers.

I'm going to try to remember to make/pick up some hankies soon and see if I notice a difference.

As for keeping up, I don't do a very good job of it. I'm trying to establish new habits, though, and one of them is dusting while I play with DS. If he gets distracted enough to play by himself for a few minutes, I dust a bookshelf or a windowsill. If he's really into playing by himself, I wetdust the window sills and baseboards. It doesn't take long. I just leave microfiber dust cloths (or failed pocket diaper inserts) lying around. It's easy enough to shove those in a drawer if guests show up, y'know?

I think 99% of the dust in the bathroom comes from the TP and blue towels I use. There is a fair dusting near the TP holder of white soft dust, and a good collection of blue fuzzies under the towel rack. I guess it comes from both places.
