Due to the expensive prices here, I just don't do some of those things, like going out for a movie, buying children's soap, etc.
Are you up north? My uncle used to run a grocery store and artist's co-op up north, and he'd actually send my parents pictures of things with their price tags because the prices were so unbelievable. Once he sent a picture of a single 2x4 that was on sale for $12.

yeah, even though I've lived here for nearly 5 years, I'm still in price shock up here. Absolutely everything here costs a ridiculous amount, no matter where I've tried to shop. If I find something cheap, it turns out there's a reason it was cheap. Cause it's crap!

See I guess that is the problem. In Vermont we do not have:

CVS, Target, Walgreens...etc. etc. etc. etc!

We only have a Price Chopper, Shaws, Healthy Living, Hannafords and our Co-op. For drug stores we only have Kinny's (local to our region) and Rite Aid.

I've never seen Free coupons or anything like that

See if you can find the blue frozen fod coupon book at Shaw's. It just came out this weekend. That is the one with some free coupons. Today I got free frozen bagels, vegetables, lemonade, pie crust and frozen yogurt. Plus the deal they have going until Thursday is get $10 when you spend $25 but they don't tell you that the $25 is shelf prices, not sale prices so then use the $10 to do the deal again. Today, I spent $8.57 and got back a coupon for $10 off my next order and $2 off $10 worth of produce. Can't beat that. Check out Hot Coupon World for more details.

My husband does the grocery shopping on his way home from work. Last night he found a deal ... spend $25 on some brand of frozen foods (most of the stuff we'd not eat if we were paid to) and then when you checkout, you get a $10 coupon attached to the receipt. He called me three times from the cell while he was standing in the frozen food section telling me how complicated it was trying to figure out which things counted, which didn't. Then he spent about a half an hour in the cereal aisle trying to pick out WIC approved cereals in the correct combo of box sizes when there were no signs for WIC approved items as there are supposed to be. He freaked out last night thinking he didn't get the receipt, checked his coat pockets, his pants' pockets only to find out he'd put the receipt in his back pants' pocket.

If you have a Rite Aid, check out
http://www.moneysavingmom.com/money_...als/index.html We don't have Rite Aid around here, but it looks like you can get some pretty good deals there.
And on Hot Coupon World I found individual forums for Shaw's, Price Chopper, and Hannafords
Pretty much if you have access to a chain store, you can find an online resource that will tell you what the best sales are and where to find the coupons for it.

My prices are a bit higher, but I stockpile

toothpaste when it is a $1 a box
tuna when it is $.50 a can (I can make a LOT of meals with a can of tuna if I have to!)
pasta $1 a box/bag

I rarely find anything else at rockbottom prices.. but those are things that I have found in the past and keep an eye out for..

oh yeah, and those Keilbasa's when they go to 2 for $5.. Which I can find at Fred Meyer's sometimes.. Is that Meijer for the rest of you? I have often thought that, but I am not sure..

I have to buy All free and clear for laundry detergent because me and my daughters get skin problems with any other detergent. The only other thing I've used is vinegar/baking soda, but since we no longer have a costco membership, I can't find baking soda in any store that is in a larger container than the tiny box sold for baking.

I use Dove shampoo and conditioner and it costs me $7.99 for a huge bottle(each) that lasts several months.

We are also on WIC and get our cheese, cereal, milk, peanut butter and eggs from that (WIC doesn't allow us to choose organic, though).

The stores we have here include costco, fred meyer, safeway (carr's), and there is a natural pantry, but no way I can afford shopping there. There is a store in Wasilla called Three Bears similar to Costco without the membership and a Rite-aid shoprite that sells quality meat, but Wasilla is too far away to drive there for regular shopping.

Oh, we also have Wal-mart and Target and Sears here, but they don't sell anything I buy regularly. Then ther eis the downtown 5th avenue mall where I shopped once, but it's way too expensive and you have to pay for parking and it's a crowded mall, so I don't like it.
I have a costco membership now.. I will gladly take you if you need to go.. we go about every other week anyway..

And yeah, we rarely go to 5th ave anymore.. they have gotten way too high end for me.. Coach, Nordstrom, Banana Republic.. I remember when it was all about Eddie Bauer and JCPenney..

I will have to take you up on that. We are in need of shampoo, conditioner and toilet paper, but we will have to wait until we have more than $20 in checking.

I won't pay for sanitary napkins or tampons. I use a cup for the most part, but I have a pretty decent sample stockpile for when I don't want to or can't. Tampax is always giving away tampons and Kotex gives awy nifty little sample packs a lot.

FYI Walmart.com has pantiliner and napkin samples on their site right now. http://instoresnow.walmart.com/In-St...e-samples.aspx

Thanks for posting this! I have gotten several free samples through their website, but always when someone else has reminded me online. For some reason I never think to check for myself.

I am with the folks who said toothpaste should be free or close to it, same with toothbrushes and deodorant.

I won't pay more than $2 for a pack of pads or tampons or pantiliners (and my heavens, I don't think I'll need to buy another pack before menopause.)

I don't like to pay more than a dollar for body wash, shampoo or conditioner.

I prefer homemade salad dressing but when I eat bottled it is the Ken's stuff because there's almost always a free or -$2 coupon (which makes it free with a little overage at Super Target) and that works for me!

I can usually get gum for super-cheap or free with coupons.

I was checking out my stockpile the other night, and I figure that in case of total disaster, we'll starve before we start to have BO or dirty hair. LOL.

I hear you, BUT ask your CVS if they'll take expired ECBs (some do!) or just use whatever you have in a second transaction so they don't sit in your purse. Just go get some milk and Kleenex or something.

Woman, you are gonna love it. It's highly addictive. Although my daughter's room looks like a CVS puked in it. Thank goodness she still sleeps in our room!

i try not to go over a dollar for almost anything. Like everyone else here I haven't paid for tylenol, excedrin, cold medicine, toothpaste, shampoo, or bodywash in years....

then I always get pasta, canned corn, beans, tomatoes, cereal, olive oil, salad dressing, popcorn, granola bars, mayo, juice, and chips for under $1...

the lower the price the more I buy...

like when meullers whole wheat pasta was .19/ box I bought about 20 boxes... and last week kraft cheese was .91/ block so I bought 12 blocks...I have about 40 cans of muir glen tomatoes that were only about .17/can... etc
