Hi all! I am working on a World Water Day celebration/education day to raise awareness about the global water crisis. The organization, Dream Village, is trying to educate people about water offering free resources to facilitate the discussion of the global water crisis in schools. The resources include a book, website, giving allowances for children to donate to a cause, World Water Day is March 22, 2009.
According to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme on Water Supply and Sanitation, more than 1 in 6 people worldwide (894 million) don't have access necessary basic amount of freshwater needed for drinking, cooking and cleaning.
If you are a teacher, educator, homeschool group leader, community leader, troop leader or something along those lines engaging with children ages 6-10, they are signing people up to participate in a water education day on March 20, 2009 (or you could schedule whenever convenient if you already are doing a water unit or it would likely apply to an Earth Day event as well).
From their materials:
"Dream Village educates children about important social, economic, and environmental issues by combining illustrated children’s picture books with a fun and interactive web portal. Best of all, the children choose how and where Dream Village makes its charitable donations. With Dream Village, children learn, interact, and then affect real-life positive change."
"We are looking for schools and individual teachers who are looking for a fun, informative, and accessible way to educate their children on the global water crisis and who are also interested in teaching their children about getting involved and making a difference."
The site for information and to sign up can be found here: http://corporate.dream-village.org/worldwaterday/
Thanks for reading. I hope some of you join us in celebrating World Water Day!
