Ugh my BIL lost his job today

What a way to start a Monday. He called me this am looking for his brother. I'm so sad for him since he has had such a hard life. He JUST moved out of his friends house (he had been renting a room for years to recover from life events) and is paying $40 more a month for a place of his own. He has no wife to support him and no credit cards due to previous bad credit (but he has done really well fixing it up to an acceptable level). He has court ordered child support and has been in the construction industry for the last 15 years and NOTHING else job wise. I told him to apply for unemployment but I know that won't pay for his bills or his child. Our Sunday paper employment section has gone from maybe 12 pages (2 years ago) to about 1.5 pages of job and 3/4th of it is healthcare.
I just don't know how to help him and our house is already too small for my family. Argh this economy is horrible and it's happening to everyone I know!

It sucks on so many levels for almost everyone My husband can't FIND work, he's applying everywhere, even to jobs that are actively hiring, and nothing

that is a tough situation. I would really encourage him to apply and also I have been told by dh that many of his ex-coworkers who loss their jobs and found new ones that they were the most successful with personal contacts - ie asking friends and anyone that he knows to ask their employers if they are hiring and asking ask their friend's friends to do the same. He might get a 1000 "no"s but it is just the 1 "yes" that he needs.

Thanks for the responses.. the recovery projects areas are news to be but our state is not participating at this time.. blah.. We'll help him stay motivated and apply everywhere!
