Is there a special way to do this? Is there a special way for aio's and covers too?

I strip by running HOT washes on the lowest water setting with nothing. Run repeatedly until no suds.

I do the same but with lots of water - and turn up the hot water heater.

Yep...same here. Just do hot washes and check the water as it agitates. If there are suds (not air bubbles from the agitation, but actual suds) there is still detergent residue that's being rinsed away.
