Please help regarding MMR

well, dh and i have really made our decision but people keep getting in our ear. dd has been vaxed on our alternate schedule. we skipped hep b and rotavirus. we're also skipping varicella and we've skipped the flu shot too which after doing research found is not effective in infants anyway. she's gotten dtap (no other shots on the day she got this), polio, hib, pcv. her year well visit is coming up. dh and i decided no mmr. if and when she gets it, she'll get it before preschool. mother in law says we should get it for her because we're traveling to jamaica with dd and because she'll be starting a mommy and me toddler group after birthday. i checked the cdc's website and there is no problem with measles in region of jamaica we're going to and dr. sears says unless you are mingling with the locals for several weeks it's not something to worry about. we are confident about not getting it for her but i dont want to start having her live in a bubble. can't go to grocery store she might catch this or that, ya know? sorry so long.

Have you looked at the side effects of measles? It really isn't that bad of a disease. It's really similar to chicken pox... it was even the subject of comics and tv shows several years ago. It's just a normal childhood disease! Not that you want your LO to get it while you are in Jamaica, but it doesn't really seem like something to vax over.

I wouldn't worry about it....measles is not something to stress about unless your child has other health issues that would put her at risk. Many of us here don't vax at all and our LO's are not living in bubbles! Enjoy your trip!

While measles can have severe complications as every disease or medication, these are the risk factors according to the WHO itself:

Quote:
Young Age
Malnutrition
Overcrowding
Immune deficiency
Vitamin A deficiency

Measles scares me about as much as chicken pox does (in other words, it doesn't scare me.) I hope my son gets measles. Hopefully someone will post a link to the episode where all the Brady kids get it on the Brady bunch. Not scary at all. Mumps doesn't scare me too much or Rubella. I hope that my child will develope natural immunity to all three diseases. The MMR is not a shot that I ever think "Oh gosh...am I making a mistake not getting this one?!?" After reading about the diseases I laugh in the face of the MMR. To me, the risk of what could happen after that shot don't even come close to equaling the risk of the diseases. Just stop telling people about your vaccination choices. It makes life a whole lot easier. My BIL brought over an article the other day about the (gasp) rise in measles, expecting me to freak out and run to the Pediatricians for the MMR. So what? I am however surprised that you have decided absolutely against the MMR, but ok'd the DTaP. That shot scares me just as much if not more than the MMR.

I think this is a great attitude. I've always disagreed with irrational fear of disease, and wish more effort were taken to approach preventative care with education on how to treat disease as opposed to simply rolling up the sleeve.

Great post. Thanks. I wasn't scared regarding DTap.

ETA: My mom and I had a discussion this week and she had mumps, rubella and measles when she was kid and she's fine.
