What is this stuff called? Waxy black paper?

Sorry for the vague topic title.

In high school art, there was this paper with a sort of waxy black finish on the top. I used a scraper tool to scratch off the surface and it was white underneath. I made some really neat pictures this way. I really liked doing this and would like to find that paper again, but I have no idea what it was called or where I could find it.

Any help would be FANTASTIC! Thanks!

At work at the moment. But I know what you're talking about. Maybe do a quick search for "engraving" or "intaglio"?

Let me know.

SCRATCH ART! Ha!

Thanks a lot, guys. I looked up all the terms you guys suggested (All I could come up with on my own was etching and that wasn't right) and it led me to scratch art.

So thanks a bazillion!

Slightly off topic, but I remember doing something in art as a kid where we took crayons and colored a piece of paper really heavy to get a layer of wax on the surface then covered it in a few coats of India ink. After it was dry scratched the ink off once it was dry to make a pitcher with the colors from the crayons showing through.

Yes, it's scratch art. To add to the pp, if you get some soap with the India ink, it keeps the ink from being resisted by the wax crayon. Just dip the brush in the ink, swirl it on a bar of soap, then brush on the wax crayon surface.
