Selling our car on Craigslist - tips needed!

oops - meant to post in Finances! Cross-posted

I just listed our 95 Honda Accord on Craigslist and have received over 19 responses in 30 minutes. Everyone wants me to call them back. I realize that 50% are probably scams.

What's the best way to deal with this kind of sale? The Kelly blue book price was $2200. We have it listed for $1000 b/c it needs $1200 in immediate repairs. It would be perfect for someone who knows how to repair cars.

My DH is not home until 7pm. Obviously I wouldn't let anyone over to see the car without his being there.

When they test drive the car, should I ask for their keys or wallet? I don't want them to drive away in our car. I also don't want DH to be in the car with a stranger.

Any tips?

My IL's did the same thing recently. When they had test drivers, they ask for their DL - just like they do at the dealership. They made sure to stay within their neighborhood, and I would make sure that your husband is home, too!! I think your car is priced just right and yes, you will get a few phone calls or emails asking weird questions... Good luck!

I've sold two cars on Craigslist. Don't be like me and forget to get a bill of sale. D'oh! I ended getting one a few days later after stalking the buyer, but that week was very nerve-wracking. I'm still not sure how I remembered for one car and not the other (the cars were sold within days of each other).

Ask for a DL to test drive. Both times, someone was home when people came over to check the cars out. Make sure you sign the title correctly. Don't forget to take your license plate off and any other tags (like military base tags).

Good luck!

We listed our old van on CL last month and sold it within two hours. DH went with them on the test drive. We also made sure to check with our insurance company and asked if the other drivers would be covered. If they got into an accident while test driving the car will still be in your name!

Thank you for the advice - the car sold this evening and it was a breeze...
