S/O The cost of things/stockpiling food

I'm trying to get our grocery bills way down and our healthy eating (more veggies and whole grains) way up. But I'm wondering if I'm being cheap, or if there really is less expensive food out there....

Way back when I was single (about 6 or 7 years ago), I lived in a large metropolitan area. Out in the suburbs, we had Whole Foods, which was nice but I couldn't afford. On the "other" side of town (where I grew up), they got a nice little organic market that I loved. I got beans and whole grains in bulk for 50-75 cents a pound.

Now I'm in the southwest where beans and rice are staples and I can't find them for less than $2 a pound.

Quinoa is even more!

Is this what food costs now?

It depends on the amount you by. Not sure if azure standard delivers where you're at - or maybe you could find a drop point in a larger town, but most of their 25# bags of beans are a little more than $1 a lb, but generally not over $1.50/#. Maybe you can find a way to bulk order with some friends to get variety? There are other places that you can bulk order from, or you may be able to get a bulk discount from a local store. Even our privately owned natural food store here will order for me for wholesale plus 10%. Not a great deal on everything, but generally better than the shelf price....

Good luck!
