Frugal moving

We are buying our first house and moving in during May. : :

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity we are being granted, and we're jumping on it.

We moved last year in May, and spent extra money on things we hadn't thought about - I didn't cook anything prior, and had half of our food in one place and our cooking appliances in another, so we ended up buying pizza from what had to be one of the most expensiv eplaces in town. Not knowing anything because we were new here, it was out first mistake :-)

Then there was the unxpected extra trips with a trailer, using more gas, more eating on the go, etc.

This time I have time to plan and prepare. I'm thinking of making shredded roast beef in the crockpot the day before, so we can eat a hearty, filling meal the next day in the midst of moving. Finger food, easy to heat up, don't need to locate many utensils to make it happen.

We're going to rent a U-Haul truck (is there anyone cheaper? Does U Haul have coupons?) to take over one load, then probably a trailer to rent for the day for the smaller things that may not fit on the truck (mileage will kill us with more than one trip in the truck, though gas will eat us up in extra trips, its still cheaper than making a second trip with the u=haul truck).

We're already beginning to pack, and i want to have the entire house packed and ready to go, so that I can go to the new house with my van stuffed, then just stay ther to unpack while my husband and helpers go back for more. Last time we had a limited number of boxes and I was packing at the apt, unloading in a pile at the rental house and bringing boxes back to the apartment to pack and move more! What a nightmare!

What can I do to make this move frugal? The new house is about 60 miles away if I remember correctly. Each trip we make has to be worthwhile - but my trip up with my van packed will be limited, beacuse I'll also have 4 kids in the van with me... But I will pack the best I can.

What kind of food can I prepare prior to the move that are easily eaten on the go, and are tasty to prevent hubby from stopping at a fast food place? What about easy finger snacks for the kids?

Well, this may not be an option for you, but I have found in previous moves that it is actually a better idea all around to rent a larger moving truck and then take the time to pack it well so that you only need to make one trip. We are also moving in May (cross country) so we will obviously need to do this, but we also did it when we moved about 60 miles 2 years ago. It takes extra planning because you need to pack your boxes very efficiently but its totally worth it. Even though you are spending extra money on the truck I think that it is made up in the organization of the move.

I agree on the larger truck. Those trucks only get *maybe* 10 miles to a gallon. So if you are going an extra 120 miles round trip, that's at least 25 dollars in gas, not to mention time wasted. So weigh that against the cost of the bigger truck.

One of the things we found was that U-haul has low daily prices but charges a LOT for the mileage. However many/most? car rental companies also have moving trucks/vans for rent and while you pay more than U-haul for the day, the mileage cost is much, much lower. This depends on whether you're moving a short or longer distance though (if you're only going 5-10 minutes away the U-haul may make more sense).

Have you looked at something like PODS?

We know people who've used PODS and loved then. We've got a move coming up, but PODS doesn't go to either of the places that we need to send stuff.

Well, dh and I know a lot of people with pickup trucks, and it costs slightly less to take all of them out for steaks afterward than it does to rent a moving truck...

Making food ahead of time is a really good idea. :
